Why are we letting these things happen to us?
« on: September 12, 2008, 03:36:34 PM »
There seems to  be too much blaming immigrants and single mothers for what's happening.it's not them.......it's politicians ( all parties) who think it's right for us to pay a bigger % of our pensions in tax than the CEO of a Power Company does of his wodge.

We are the children of the 60s..remember Grosvenor Square.we don't have to put up with it.  Make life uncomfortable for politicians ( they're doing it to us).  Get together a group of a dozen or so...take flasks and sandwiches, folding chairs? and spend the day in the foyer of one of the well-heated government buildings in every city and town.  Make sure someone has a mobile with the phone numbers of the local paper and TV in it for if they threaten to eject you ( they won't do it with media there)

An impromtu whist drive might pass the time, but from 9 to about 6 you won't have to worry about heating.

The only people who seem to get noticed now are those like kids on corners who make themselves visible., so let's be a nuisance

I think that the saying that people get the Government they deserve seems to be quite right. If you have read some of my other posts, you will see that I have attempted to start a new political party which would attempt to right the many wrongs of equity and fairness within our society. But who can be bothered to move their backside to help? The sad truth is very, very few of us are unwilling to play an active role in our democracy, and getting on for half of us can't even be bothered to vote. What sort of government can you expect with that sort of attitude throughout society?

Grahamesme,

Sadly you are right. We mostly grew up in awe of politicians and believed they knew what they were doing (!) There was and still is the defeatist attitude that my single vote won't make much difference.

However, in West Somerset we dumped a spendthrift Tory council at the last election and now have one run by a majority of Independents so it can be done.

Hopefully with increasing PC awareness, we can still combine our efforts even without the umbrella of a political party.

The results for West Somerset do not reflect such a dramatic posting:

Conservative  17  lost 4 now 13

 Labour 2  lost 1 now  1

 Liberal Democrat  2 lost 1 now 1

 Independent     10 gained  6  now 16

Independents do hold the majority. What cost savings have they made?

John,

Do you know West Somerset?

This used to be a dyed-in-the-wool Tory area - the electorate habitually voted Tory for years regardless. Although actual Councillor numbers are small, it seems to me that a change in status from under a third (10/31) to over a half (16/31) merits what I posted.

The departing Tories (including several who had right arms but no voices) had squandered Council assets (selling off the major carpark of an area that relies very heavily on tourism - our population trebles in the summer) and in particular, after the election but before the handover, imposed a non-negotiable liability of many thousand pounds on the incoming Council. Other examples of Tory inspired financial waste were identified around that time too.

The old Council also roused the electorate to a 50% petition and 6 mile march in protest about their behaviour. Last year, in a survey of Forum members, 83% of responders (42% of total membership) wanted Party Politics taken out of local government.

If such an intensity of feeling were to be reflected across the country, one could find we do have the power to shake some sacred cows. Unfortunately, the inept laxity of those in a regulatory role has placed us in the position of having to repay the cost of baling out a very affluent sector of the economy for at least the next generation, so sadly we do need governance by a combination of level-headed individuals from ALL sources whilst dumping those whose skills are mostly exercised in redefining words to generate language that aids their spinning.

geum,

I do know West Somerset.  How much is open to debate. But then again some people can live in an area all their lives and not know much either.

I agree with what you are saying but the population size for West Somerset is not a great sample of view.
It is small enough to have an interest in the Council, to make a difference and have a view. No doubt when Councils and boundaries were changed in 1974. The eye was to increasing and controlling the populous sold on improving services etc.

Party politics are the biggest danger to democracy. The present government are a fine example of this danger. Going to war on lies, spending collected and increasing taxes poorly (up 51 percent in real terms over the last 10 years). Selling off the majority of centuries old gold reserves at rock bottom prices.  Overtaxing and collapsing pension funds. All supported by an army of nodding sycophants.

I won’t go on, the list is depressing.
