Should old people be allowed to drive?

Many older drivers have the sense to drive within their limitations. Avoiding rush hour traffic and not driving at night. Many like me only use the car for shopping trips and to get to the airport  Not sure about a fit to drive medical but I do have a fit to dive medical each year.

I think it is time that we, the older generation, (and some of the younger ones) did a regular "fit to drive" test.

The result would suprise you.. it has been done.. Under 30's have all the reaction times and little experience.

I am 70 years of age and if my age group were unsafe to drive I would expect my car insurance to rise accordingly to cover being in an higher risk group. It seems they are happy and have no reason to worry. There are very bad drivers in all age groups and its up to the police to stop them.

The question is how old is old. I thought 70 was old till I got there and found I could still walk 3 1/2 miles to the GYM each morning and do an hours work out.

I have quit driving voluntarily. I am 61, and 2 years back I was diagnosed with cataracts.

I was a police trained and safe driver, and gave up rather than cause an accident which might have resulted in somebody's death, or permanent disability.

Giving up driving untill your cataracts have been removed would have been a better idea HG. This is now a very quick and safe operation and in this area a very short waiting time.

Politicians of all ages cause more deaths than all of the pensioners of the whole world put together who drive - they should be given a test  for common sense and integrity - I was about to put honesty - but in a politician . . . ?

One thing everyone as over looked if everyone drove to the high safe standards which we have to do during our driving tests the roads would be much safer for all.
But no body or very few if any do. Have a go at sticking to the speed limits and just see what queue you get to your rear. Leave the required gap between you and the vehical you are following on motorways the gap will fill within seconds. How many drivers smoke while driving. How many dolly birds do you see who must have a mobile phone stuck to there ear holes. And so on, its so easy to pick on pensioners
