It depended on whether I was going out with a mod or rocker lad. I had the outfit for all eventualities.

And I've done a ton on the back of a Triumph Bonneville!

A rocker. From my 1st bike a early 40's ex-WD Ariel 350 to a BSA Silver Star 500 twin, Sadly I wrote that off and common sense dictated an end to my Biking career  :-\

Oh nostalgia.
I like the Kwaka. My brother had a Z1300 and foolishly let me loose on it for a "round the block" trial run. I went off to a local bypass and got it up to a fair old lick. I was clocking 160Mph when the vibration and buffeting meant I could no longer read the dials.  I had to concede that owning one would be tantamount to suicide so I now stick to four wheels and do an occasional blast around Silverstone in an open wheel race car just to feed the habit

Definitely a ROCKER with my beautiful Norton Dominator twin! Had a great girlfriend at the time, sittting on the pillion with her hands in my pockets to keep (them) warm :P ;D

I see they are making a "New" speed-twin replica these days. Saw one up the Cheddar Gorge the other week.

Those were the days of good old British made motor bikes. Trumph tiger 500cc speed twin was a really powerful bike but 85 to 90 mph was its limit. The law changed to stop learners having these large bike whick killed off the British bike industry. In came the 250 cc from Japan which were faster and cheaper than our larger cc bikes. My first bike was a 500cc BSA that also did 85 MPH but with a side car and 2 passengers still did the same. Not been on a motor bike for 50 years but good memories.

My FIRST bike was the good old BSA Bantam! 125cc put put, but it taught me the basics before going up to a Matchless 500 single cylinder. Got thrown off this bike a couple of times before I got the nack of using the de-compression lever to start the bloody thing!

There was a finger lever on the L/H handlebar that when pulled, lifted the exhaust valve (I think) to release the huge compression on such a large cylinder. If you got it wrong and you pushed down on the kickstart as the piston came up on the compression stroke, and it fired, the kickstart litterally threw you off the bike! :'(

I guess with the 500cc twins that leaver wasn't required although you did get a good kick at times.
