Hello Chris. I reckon nobody can remember their old car, it was so long ago. My brain is still quite sharp however and I can clearly remember the old sod. It was a second - or third - hand. I can't remember which, Morris 10, but I was sold a pup. It's doors opened backwards, it had a clock which didn't work and the handbrake kept slipping. It didn't teach me a lesson though. I kept getting sold pups. Apart from an old Morris van with wornout tyres my worst nightmares were a Fiat van on which the front wheels slipped their bolts allowing the wheels to jump off and curl under the vehicle like a sledge. The other was a Lada (did I hear a suppressed laugh?). The swine kept trying to kill me, no joking. Apart from conking out in the middle of heavy traffic, it would slew round whenever I had to brake hard, sending me sideways across the road. I could write a book on my narrow escapes. Maybe I will.

A1938 Vauxhall 22 or something like that...just like something out of Bonnie and Clyde, blue leather interior, big straight 6 engine, terrible cable brakes but I loved every minute of it,I bought it,taxed it for 3 months and insured it third party fire and theft all for £20,mind you that was about 10 weeks wages then.
The new 10 year MOT test was then introduced and it failed miserably but I still got a fiver off the scrap yard for it,happy days....
:D

My first car was a three wheel Bond mini car. It had a 197cc motorcycle engine mounted over the single front wheel with a cable connected to the kick start and a lever mounted like a hand break to start the engine . The brakes were not to clever and it sounded like a demented motor boat , being two stroke you had change the spark plug when it oiled up, so carrying spare plugs was a must.there was no way it would have passed an M.o.T. but that had not been invented yet.
For all the down side , My Family ( My wife and two very small children ) traveled to Southend on Sea, and Butlins at Clacton and had a whale of a time.

My first car was a Morris Minor, 1952 vintage, splitscreened and black!

The engine was an 850cc.

Oh! the nostalgia, and the effort to remember that far back. My first car was a Ford Prefect(?)( the one with the crocodile bonnet) circa late 40's early 50's. Side valve engine and 3 speed gear box, but in this case only 2 speed gear box. the previous owner had somehow stripped 2nd gear, driving it consisted of getting maximum revs in 1st gear and then going for 3rd, which, providing there was not too much of a slope of too strong a headwind, cause it to shudder and labour until it managed to get some speed up. Once rolling it was fine just as long as you didn't need to stop in a hurry, Drum brakes and worn out shoes operated by pre stretched cables were not the optimum system. It eventually committed suicide by throwing itself off the edge of a sand quarry. Which although it was a restricted area was a local courting(remember that) spot. Having been parked up for a while we had just exited the car for fresh air when there was a whooshing sound and about 100yds of land disappeared taking the car with it.
I have to agree with Pauline re the mini, I had one in the sixties and although they were great fun there was also, when combined with 60's dress a very real danger element. There have been many occasions when I have leapt into the mini, roared off and at the first road junction gone to apply the brakes only to find my flared trouser were shut in the door and my foot wouldn't reach the brake pedal. :o  I got quite adept at both braking with the right foot or opening and closing the door at speed to release the flares  ::)

Can't remember what it was but the gear stick used to come out of it's socket so I had to drive with one hand holding it in gear and one on the wheel - I still drive one handed holding the shift (even though it's not lose) :-)
