There is something like that. Married woman can get a basic State Pension based on their husband’s National Insurance contribution record if their husband is over State Pension age and has claimed his own State Pension. Depending on the amount of contributions their husband has made, they could get a basic State Pension of up to 60% of the full basic State Pension. See http://www.thepensionservice.gov.uk/pdf/pm/pm6feb08.pdf for further details.

They can also make voluntary contributions for missing years in the last 6 years.

After April 2009 you will also be able to make voluntary contribution for an additional 6 years back to 1975. See http://www.thepensionservice.gov.uk/state-pension/basic/faqs.asp

If your wife did not pay NI contributions because she was receiving benefits, looking after children or sick or disabled people, then those years should still be credited.
