Poor "doctor" service
« on: July 07, 2011, 01:23:22 PM »
My Father was the local GP for many years. Every morning, 9-11, he held his "surgery" at our house, where he would treat his visiting patients and dish out self prepared prescriptions.

During the morning surgery time my Mother took incoming calls for visits for the day. At 11am my Father, sometimes with me in the passenger seat, would set off to visit the people who had requested a visit, and didn't go home until everyone had been seen. Then he had his evening surgery 6-7pm. And of course the phone was always on for "emergencies".

Last Wednesday I phoned the local surgery for an appointment, having developed a frozen neck overnight. Non available until today, eight days later! Do you have a drop in today, I asked as I was in some pain. No, this is canceled today as there is a meeting??

So a weeks worth of pain killers and I went today.

Where has the "system" gone wrong?

Two words Jobsworth and Targets - doctors surgeries are now money making enterprises rather than patient orientated

At my last but one surgery you had to make appointments online and my last surgery was 10 miles away from where I lived and no home visits were made despite there being no buses between villages.

Chrisjay, you post has made me appreciate even more our local surgery, they are brilliant , Doctors, Nurses, and reception staff, OK you need to make an appointment but if it is urgent they will allways fit you in that day, and all ways have time to hear your problems, in addition the local community nurses cannot be faulted

I'll move to where you live I have been here 9 months now and they only got my records two weeks ago apparently England and Wales have different computer systems and they don't 'talk' to each other - I seem to remember millions was spent updating the system so you could go anywhere and they would be able to access your records

Hope you are feeling better Cheddar caveman, it is a really painful condition, isn`t it? I too can remember the days when the family doctor (and actually someone you knew!) called at your home if you were too poorly to attend the daily surgery, sadly those days are long gone.
Never look down on anyone, unless it is to offer your hand to help them up.
