Well said Angelo !

I find it anathema to see - on the one hand - a little Englander-driven fight to get out of Europe so that they can maintain what they see as their independent sovereignty while the same people try to deny Scotland the exact-same freedom to generate their own free expression and future development in a free West.

"FREE"is a small word but it has very large connotations for people who feel that they are being stifled by distant government and I feel that this desire for freedom should be considered by all of the people that want to ensnare the smaller countries around them.

I guess it all boils down to CHOICE as if a people want to - choose to - make new friends and allies and trading partners while still maintaining their individuality and sovereignty this has to be a good way to go. So long as we do it via democracy and not via autocracy or dictatorship then what evolves as a result will be good for the majority who make these decisions.

To those who feared that "little" Scotland could not manage on its own in that big, bad outside world, Mr Salmond always used to say: "Don't worry – we'll be all right inside the EU." No longer. Demands from the opposition parties for a clear statement about his current policy on Europe are now met only with vacillation.

Just as when his admiration for countries like Ireland and Iceland in the so-called "arc of prosperity" turned sour when the banks crashed, so events in Europe are conspiring to make a laughing stock of another plank in his platform for separation

Bertie Armstrong, chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, hit out at the cuts in days at sea, saying: "While fishing opportunity in terms of tonnage has always been vital, this time around it was the granting of enough time at sea to actually catch the fish that was under threat.

"This is a bitter blow for our fishing fleet, which is now going to struggle to maintain economic viability under the impact of these totally unwarranted cuts.

"Effort control (by cutting days at sea) is fundamentally flawed as a fisheries management measure and the Commission has totally ignored the real progress in stock conservation in Scotland in recent years through unilateral conservation measures that have helped boost stock recovery. Our whole industry is now facing a very difficult future."

BTW . Will an independent scotland repay the bailout money to "english taxpayers " , that rescued RBS & HBOS .
Both are registered in scotland , so they are scottish companies !

Caminito, On your last point , probably not ! It would be interesting to get a breakdown of who the investors were in HBOS  & RBS before they stars talking about payback. Just to see who was making all the lolly when they were doing nothing wrong but making money. They you can talk about payback !
As for the fishing thing, when I was a lad the boats were full of very large fish, 100s of boxes a time, by the time I was 20 the fishing was misserable, 10s of boxes, fish undersize and much of it was not worth landing. Over fished by uncontroled exploitation.  (former fishing family me).Even then they were fishing ( poaching) conservation grounds like Luce Bay. Wiping out future fish stocks.Perhaps the fishermen are thier own worst enemy.

Just because the Royal Bank of Scotland or the Halifax Bank of Scotland were called "Scottish" does not mean that are actually Scottish. Both of these banks were international in form and they were destroyed by reckless risk-taking during the "boom" days.

While they WERE bailed out - amongst others - by taxpayers money this money was not just raised in England, it was raised in Britain. For our sins we ARE members of the Union even if the Act of Union was a fit-up job done by English and Scottish and Welsh landowners without any democracy in it at all.

Yes, there is no doubt that during the world-wide crash, economies like Iceland and Ireland found that they were overstretched - followed by Greece, Italy and Spain and as the deregulation in the Euro made that currency weak and easily damaged.

None of these happenings could be described as normal happenings as even the largest economy in the world, namely America, was at one point risking it's triple A standing until it too was bailed out.

I am sure that once the world settles down and the banking regulations are brought up to speed again we will see a successful Eurozone that Scotland would be proud and pleased to be part of. Cameron and his Tories can please themselves.

Time for English Independence - long live free enterprise - and common decency. (In the meantime make Scotland alcohol free???) Remember life is short and precious no matter how or where.

Hi again Avalonmpk  nice to hear from you !

Actually I agree with your call for English independence as many people in the North of England feel as we do in Scotland about being too far from government.

As far as making Scotland "alcohol-free" is concerned, I think that that one will be much harder to achieve due to Scotland's great love for "the Cratur"

Papa:
It's tongue in cheek, I would no more deprive a Scot his/her tipple than I would deprive anyone else of free speech. Cheers!

I would like to see an independant Yorkshire LOL
But seriously it has really suffered over the Years with the demise of the Steel & Coal industries.
Hopefuly new industry will emerge but slowley.
I think one of the main problems with our society is we are  consumer and people have either stopped or slowed with their purchasing power?
If you cannot do someone a good turn never do them a bad one.
