Hobbies for the ladies.
« on: August 06, 2011, 08:09:59 AM »
Having looked through the hobbies section there does not seem to be much for women.  ???
Yes I know women can do pretty much the same as men nowadays but I am thinking more on the lines of knitting, crotcheting and card making.

NOT that I am particularly good at anything although I do some charity knitting when the old fingers will let me without going into cramp spasms and I used to write a lot of poetry but I dont think poetry writing really comes under the heading of what I would call a hobby.

I am used to seeing lovely embroidery and cards made by members of other forums I belong to and just thought it would be nice if the ladies could share their skills with us by showing some photos of what they can do.
If a section is put up for the ladies I will put one ot two photos on there of the knitting that I have done just to start the section off although I am no knitting expert.

What do the other ladies think? I wont be offended if you are not interested. It was just an idea to help keep the forum going.

Lovely post Maywalk, good to see you back in action.

I am thinking of having another go at crochet - which is 'all the rage, fashion wise' for next Spring, I am told (?) and it grows faster, so for an amateur, that is encouraging. Not yet sure what I would try to make though.

My knitting is a disaster field, I tried hard, but the tension was never even enough.

I have seen a number of craft type shops selling patch work quilt kits, has any one tried these?

Best wishes

Thanks for getting back to me Gennaio. :)

I get crocheting patterns in my knitting books but I cant crochet now because my fingers go into cramp spasms. >:(
I still do a bit of knitting because if I do get the cramp and have to drop the needles and a few stitches drop off its easier for me to pick them up when knitting on two needles.
There are many charities wanting crocheted or knitted goods.
It would be nice to have a hobby section for anything like this.

Maywalk

I have several hobbies which I jump backwards and forwards to, I do painting which I love when I am in the mood, I will put a few on for you all to see soon, I also play bowls although have not played for about two years because of moving back to the UK and having so many things to do before playing. I play golf sometimes again something I need to take back up again, finally my biggest hobby is looking after my hubby sometimes however, I wish I could drop this hobby especially when the weather is lovely and he is waiting for his hot meal of the day! ;D

Yes I would love to see your paintings Dottie.

I am no good at playing ball games of any description but I love a game of Scrabble
and have 14 games going at the moment.  ;D
I know what you mean about hubby being the hobby.  :D :D :D :D

Talking about paintings I have some that my friend has done and then she has embroidered over them. They are wonderful and to make things more than extra special she is 89 and was a Land Army Girl during WW2.
She is fantastic and not only does she do that but she knits and crochets as well.

Maywalk I do believe that you kindly displayed some of your friends embroidery on this forum and as you have said they were brilliant  ;D very talented lady indeed and when you think of her age and that she is still doing these wonderful paintings St it truly gives us younger ones ideas and hopes for the future.

I did as a first project a picture of a woman model I saw in my son-in-laws magazine and though she was posing in such a lovely way I felt the need to paint her, remember this was my first time with brush and paints, I was amazed at the final outcome, I must admit I had a wonderful teacher.  The second project was a portrait of my nephew again I wil show you. Both later hopefully today.

Whoops sorry Dottie if I have already shown some of my friends beautiful handicraft. I must be getting old ;D :) ;)

I DO hope that we can see your handiwork soon but it doesn't look as though anyone has taken up the idea of putting a ladies hobby thread on here.
WHICH IS A PITY.   :(

Hi Ladies, it is always interesting to find out what everyone is up to and what we each enjoy. I was a fanatical Knitter and crocheter until a top spine injury ( archery) put paid to it, as any repetitive movement can send me into spasm and I can assure you all that it is not something that you would want to happen very often! I do dabble, occasionally with water colours but I have to be in the mood. I have lots of other hobbies but life is so hectic at the moment that Jeff has no time to add any photo`s (that is if I could find them ::)) I`m afraid that it is one area of the computer that I cannot get my head around and anyway he does it so much better than me. ;D
Never look down on anyone, unless it is to offer your hand to help them up.

Hi Dottie

Thanks and, well done!

What lovely pictures, I love the colours you have used; a lot of people would love to be able to paint as well and as naturally as you do - all part of an educational thrust, especially in older age.

For anyone interested in exploring further education, there is an organisation known as UTA, University of the Third Age, they have groups throughout UK and cover a wide spectrum of interests.

Let's share some more of your pics Dottie, we'll all enjoy them.

Best wishes

WOW Dottie.

They are fantabulous as my granddaughter used to say when she was little.  :)

Do you have them on show? Have you any more?

Brilliant.

WELL DONE Dottie.
You certainly seem to have a flair for painting.
Thanks for showing us some of your work.
