THE BBC & Television in General
« on: September 14, 2011, 09:29:48 AM »
I may be in a minority here ? Is the BBC worth the money ? Do they care about their customers ?
As a result of the BBC advertising that they wanted members to sit on their panel I decided that having retired I had the time to participate and duly accepted their invitation. I though that they would be asking my opinion on various programs and possibly for ideas that would improve the service.
So far I have had 3 communications from them. 1. What do I think of Eastenders, and 2. What do I think of Holby City. 3.My opinion on a game show. These were in the form of how do I rate blaa !  1,2, 3. mark my preference.
There was no where in the survey where I could say what I thought eg: complete & utter rubbish. Or , Yes I particularly liked that. What good drama.
So my 3 contributions to our national TV station are practically worthless.
I know they are short of cash but repeats and CHEAP TV seem to be the order of the day. whilst I appreciate that there are many who love these programs and I am not decrying them I feel that there is just too much made of them.
I love sport but why do we need 8 hours of GOLF at one sitting. On two consecutive days. Because it is cheap to make ?
And the repeats well It seems that they do not have enough programs to fill the schedules in their 5 channels. So perhaps they have too many channels ?w they are talking about regional News channels, what !
They still have enough money to hire a helicopter at what £300 an hour ? to show us what a field somewhere looks like, or whitehall looks like from the air. In a two minute slot ! !
I made a complaint about clik showing a presenter taking his picture face down on a scanner, this was dismissed out of hand and denied. So no luck there. Some kid will be going blind as a result of copying him.
Customers ? " We've got your money now xxx off ? ? ?

What do you think ?

Angela

I quiet agree with you they do spend money unnecessarily and it is our money they are spending, I have just renewed my licence for this coming year, it was very easy, I got an email reminder, and I said yes in a box to carry on with the direct debit Job done!

Why is it they need to send and spend money in advertising for participants like you to fill out forms which have been sent by post (more money) all they need to do is put it onto their own website and a darn sight more people would participate. I write to them from time to time if something is on the box that I disagree with or I find offensive and it takes them up to 6 months to respond and sometimes they don't even bother!!! >:(

Golf coverage by the way is very expensive and although I love to watch it I do also find that the costs to broadcast such an event is too much, they seem to have too many personnel in the background being paid to work 2-3 hours but hanging around for 3-4 days to put things up and take things down,  :o pay them on work time not on both working time and down time!

BBC are excellent at all these events on their coverage and long may it continue to be so but they have to start looking seriously at costs.

One thing that make me wonder is why in many News Items the main Presenter will inform us about a subject - then we will go to somewhere else where a roving reporter will tell us the same information - then even onto somewhere else where a different reporter will tell us the same info yet again.

Then when we get transferred  to the ' News from your Area ' we see the same news again - with a least two more different reporters than those that were on the Main News.

We at present on our Camp site get London TV where this happens - I know it happened at our old place where we watched Look North - If this goes on all over the UK with all the different regional news programs - no wonder costs are soaring.

Why all these different computer generated ' Fill-Ins ' just to tell us we are watching the BBC - we tuned into the BBC - we know that !!!!
If I wake up in the morning - I know it's going to be a Good Day - just consider the alternative !!!!!

If it was only myself to consider I would get rid of our tv and just play my music and read good books, alas Jeff does love his sport and we do enjoy the wildlife programmes.  :-\

Hi. I watched the elephants, anything by  DA is very good.
The things that get me about the beeb, are the repeats of programs shown only a couple of days previously and the endless repeating of trailers for programs coming up,sometimes weeks ahead.
My husband and I have little interest in mainstream sports, and to replace some of the programs we usually watch with sport makes us see red, especially as we don't just get the action but the endless talking heads of "experts" before and after So BBC,cut the repeats, the endless number of news reporters, the trailers and listen to what your audience enjoys,we are not all soap and sports fans !!

Hi
Has the government stealth tax known as the digital switchover arrived in your area yet ?
If you want to continue to watch tv you have to -
A. Buy a new tv (we have a perfectly good analog tv) or
2. Buy a set top box and
3. Possably a new Aeriel.
We have just re tuned, the picture is no better and we have about 40 channels of rubbish also we now get west mids news etc which we do not want.
Also we now have to plug in two electrical items which uses more elec energy, should we not be cutting back to save money and the environment? ???
Cheers
Jeff.

It is the repeats over and over again that get my goat anyone know how many times the film The Bourne Suprematy part 1 2 3 has been showing ..must have been on for at least 3yrs running ...just one of a long list of repeated films...fed up with repeats of James Bond as well played them so many times it now a big yawn from me when they come on......

Jeff and tgirls44

My tv was working fine till the switchover now I get constant reminders to retune and also my tv keeps on pausing right in the middle of a programme for some reason?

I do have an unto date tv with built in ht ready thingy etc so as far as I am concerned I should have no problems....... Wrong assumption!!!

Quite agree about so many repeats, adverts for programmes etc.  Just how many channels do we need - there are only so many hours a day one can watch TV !

Clearly from the number of repeats on all channels there is too much capacity and not enough to fill it. Unless that is it is ITV who fill their schedual with utter rubbish.

How right you are Angelo, I recently responded to the BBC Trust's comments about the forthcoming cuts, I know that they will not listen, but at least I did got things off of my chest. My wife did however enjoy the 3 walking programmes on the past 3 weeks on BBC2. cOLIN b
