Medications AGAIN!!!!
« on: September 28, 2011, 08:42:04 PM »
Reading the paper today (tonight as I have been busy all day) I see that the painkiller Diclofenac has now been accused of perhaps being the cause of heart attacks and strokes by 40% of the users!

I was prescribed these tablets years ago for my arthritis and back pains, and interestingly enough my Son in Law was also prescribed them a few years ago too, he was young and fairly it but had leg and back pains.  Now he is suffering, very badly, with a problem with his Aorta so bad that he has started a new course at Addenbrooke's, which is similar to chemotherapy.

I did have a stroke back in 2007 but thankfully had no after effects once treated at the hospital, one of the lucky ones who got away with it.  I have a heart condition which is being treated but will be with me now forever.

It seems that over 17 million prescriptions were written last year by GPs for anti inflammatory drugs, how can we be sure that what we are currently taking is not doing us more harm than good? I know we have spoken about drugs on a different thread but it is still scary.

Yes Dottie it certainly is...."scary" I mean !

Curiously my wife was put on this drug after she woke up one morning and had terrible pains in her shoulders and neck. She was in so much pain that she was crying with it, ( My we wifey NEVER cries for anything ).

I immediately called for a home visit from our doctor and thankfull he was there in  just a few minutes. He saw that Jean was in a lot of pain and he gave her an injection to kill it. He also left a prescription for Diclofenac and told her to take these until the inflammation that was causing the pain went away.

They worked but as the doc only gave a short term prescription she ran out very quickly and some of the pain came straight on back.

When she went to the surgery for further treatment a different doctor took her off the Diclofenac and said that while it was very effective that drug has a lot of dangerous side-effects and she should  not take it over any lengthy period.

Now she is just using Paracodol and we all know how problematic they can be too.

It is certainly a worry when we have to just blindly trust that our doctors are not just trying to get us out of their surgeries as quick as they can.

Here we go again on the subject that often the drugs we are given cause more problems than they solve! A couple of weeks ago Jeff was having a very uncomfortable muscular pain in his upper arm so we perchased  some Neurofen capsules from the chemist but when we got home we found the warning that they should not be taken for more than x amount of days because of the seriously increased chance of a heart attack. ::)

Took myself off statins some months ago after experiencing muscle loss and all sorts of aches and pains, back to normal and no adverse effect on cholesterol level - does make you wonder - hubby takes a grand chemical cocktail everyday prescribed by GP - often wonder if research is done on what tabs mixed up together are doing to people!

Granny bee

I doubt it but you can check by using the link Papa put on another thread if you are concerned in any way, but well done on the statins I am seriously thinking of doing the same.

Hello everyone

I have arthritis too and it's got to the point where my GP says I need a total knee replacement. I am seeing a surgeon on the 1st November. Meanwhile I have been trying to help myself through diet, exercise and supplements. I have lost a stone already, which seems to have helped. Also, I have been reading a lot about Type 11 collagen as a therapy for arthritis. If you want to know more about it check my blog http://www.supplementsforarthritis.blogspot.com

Hi Masie...Nice to talk to you !

Thanks for the connection to Type 11 collagen suppliment. I had not heard about that one before. ( The wife and I both use Glucosamine & Chondroitin tablets and they seem to help ).

I think that most elderly people get some form of joint troubles eventually and for some it can just be an irritation while like you it can mean the complete destruction of the collagen cushion in the joints.

Of course specific types of arthitis can do this much more quickly than just "wear-and-tear" ( as many doctors just love saying ), and for those there is nothing left but to get a joint-replacement ASAP.

Sadly, there is a post-code-lottery in the NHS for such operations and while some people may get the operation done very quickly in some areas, some in other areas have to wait with many years of terrible pain before the offending joint is finally replaced.

Now that the government are hell bent on saving money at any cost we are seeing less and less being done for the elderly people that are suffering such pain and I think that we are now being looked at by some politicians as if we must just wait to die and get ourselves out of the road of the youngsters instead of getting what we need when we need it.

I have always believed that any country that wants to call itself civilised must  - before doing anything else -  ensure that they look after the poor and the sick and the old, and yet it now seems that these needy demographics are being pushed further and further down the list so that now we are coming LAST, not first, for such considerations.

Anybody ?
Regards....

Papaumau.

Papa, you may find collagen type 11 more beneficial than glucosamine and chondroitin for arthritis - be it osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

I am taking GD at the moment but as the research findings from some clinical trials that compared collagen 11 with GD indicate that collagen is more beneficial I am adding it to my daily supplements.

The results indicate that collagen type 11 from undernatured chicken collagen can actually rebuild cartilage - incredible, I know, but the body of evidence seems to be growing. Read the blog on my site about the Daily Mail report of a former hurdler, age 68, who could barely walk and who has now is almost totally pain free. http://www.supplementsforarthritis.blogspot.com

My first supply  of UC11 collagen arrived today - a gift from my son. There are 60 tiny capsules and the instructions are to take one a day at bedtime, on an empty stomach. I'm very hopeful of a good outcome.

Don't forget to get your seasonal flu jab. I am having a family outing to the GP surgery this evening - Dad, age 88, me, age 63, son, age 34. Primary carers of elderly people who may be seriously affected by flu can have a free jab.

Not for me Maisie , this will be my second year jab free.  After some problems with my eyes and nose, i found i have a contact allergy to thiomersal a mecury based preservative used in flu jabs. So it's fingers crossed i don't get the flu.   bromers          ::) ::)

God bromers, are they STILL using that preservative in vaccines ? I thought that Thiomersal had been banned in Britain.

After a little bit of a search I found that it IS being "phased out" but we still do not know which vaccines are still using this toxic preservative and which are not.

See THIS

I would be pleased if anyone knows any more about this Mercury-based preservative.

Maisie......

Thanks for the tip, I will look into this use for the wife and myself !

There is a really good website called Mediguard which provides a FREE service. You enter details of the meds/supplement that you are taking and they provide a personalised report on whether or not the various pills conflict with each other. I signed up some time ago, as I take blood pressure medication and a number of supplements and they send me a quarterly report that highlights any medication issues that have recently arisen.

Details are on my blog - http://www.supplementsforarthritis.blogspot.com The blog about this is a few days old so you will have to scroll down to it.

Papaumua there are flu jabs that do not contain thiomersal but because they are more expensive and scarce, they are for children and pregnant ladies. My doctor say's if i feel unwell and have a very high temperature, it's down to the surgery no appiontment needed for some tablets. ??? ???    bromers
