Unwanted Rubbish
« on: January 31, 2012, 11:28:31 AM »
I expect many folks are like me and get really cheesed off with all the rubbish that comes clattering through the letter box.
I feel REALLY SORRY for the postman/lady with having to cart this stuff around.
Its bad enough for them with having to carry the real post especially in bad weather but this rubbish must be such a ruddy weight to cart about.
Yes I know they get paid for the job but a lot of what they cart about is unwanted rubbish.
I say this because I have just had delivered a booklet for Vauxhall cars, another for a Pizza hut delivery, one for giving to the lifeboats. another for Churchill insurance and yet another for Virgin broadband.
Plus two genuine ones with bills in for the electric and the gas used.
We are told to be GREEN concious but having stuff delivered like the first five items that have
gone straight into the waste bin makes me wonder whether its all worth it.
Just imagine all the wastage delivered this morning that will go straight in the bin.

Like you Maywalk, most of our so called "post" goes straight into the recycle bin. The problem is that with fewer people writing letters these days it is the junk mail that keeps the posties in their jobs. :-\

I always take a leaflet in the street, not because I want to read it or am interested but the way I look at it if these companies want to waste their money fine take a leaflet and keep the printers in work! Then bin it and keep the refuge collectors in work who then send it for recycling keeping the printers in work ;D

If you cannot do someone a good turn never do them a bad one.

There are two things that you can do to reduce junk mail. Firstly, register with the Mailing Preference Service. Secondly, register with the Royal Mail opt out scheme. These measures won't prevent every unwanted item from popping through your letter box, but will reduce the volume quite a lot.

The Telephone Preference Service is also a good method of cutting out most unwanted marketing calls!

I have a friendly person who 'delivers' this junk straight to the recycle bin! Remind me to increase his/her Christmas box!

Well GrannyB we have been on the telephone preference scheme for a long time but unwanted calls still keep coming through (one just an hour ago) Whoever they ask for I just say they are not at home! I KNOW I should find out the company name and repot them but it all becomes SO TIRESOME!

Apparently the TPS doesn't operate on calls from overseas, so a lot of companies are switching to this method.  Even if it looks like a UK number calling, they can, I am told, 'piggy back' on to a UK line and get around the regulations. A new twist someone alerted me to yesterday is when 'private number' appears, it's not a private number at all, but a call via VOIP (Skype or similar) which is another way around the regulations.  I either press the disconnect button, or pick up the 'phone and ask who it is and in my gruffest voice say"we are on the TPS and do not want any further calls from your company".  Also, I am informed that if you have dealt with a company before, say by ordering something on the internet, you are in effect giving them carte blanche to call you and offer you other goods and services.

I had a call yesterday (an Indian type accent as so often nowadays) claiming to be from Microsoft support informing me that my ISP had told them I had probably picked up a virus. At this point I informed him that if I had a problem I would contact Microsoft myself. At that point the phone went dead, I wonder why  ::)
Please don’t get caught with this scam. See this article.  http://pcmedic999.co.uk/wpsite/?p=578

Alan

I actually reported this one back in November to the forum members, but it's good that you have once again brought it to our attention again, it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks, dottie

I do not normally copy stuff across from other forum's (although it is neither plagiarism nor copyright as some would suggest), but given the recent posts on this thread, I thought it worthwhile as there are so many scams out there:

Quote
"I got a phone call from some one purporting to be from Microsoft, I had just updated my system so I believed it to be legit. We are all used to our calls going to the Indian Sub Continent so there was no real worries there with the guys accent. He told me that I had just updated and what I had updated. He then asked me to check that it had not gone down as an error or warning, one element of the update had. He then asked me to down load another legfit program that would give remote access to my machine. When that was done they took over the machine and started to laugh and demanded £97 for a years protection or they would do all kinds of illeagle things with my machine. And because I had given my permission there was nothing I could do. IT IS A CON DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT DO THIS. JUST PUT THE PHONE DOWN. I will now have to close down all of my accounts and start again with all kinds of new pass words etc. Be warned they are very convincing and very good at worrying you, too damn good. They are just a bunch of con men who prey on fear and lack of understanding, I am not that good with computers so I was worried. Now I am just really cross."

So beware anyone offering anything for free, or unasked for assistance.  These creatures prey on the elderly as the silver surfer is seen as a rapidly expanding, yet fatally vulnerable class.
