What about nationalism then ?
« on: November 28, 2009, 01:06:51 PM »
I am proud of being a Scot and I would like to see Scotland free of the English shackles and free to compete in and join with Europe like any other small country might do.

I see no reason why Scotland should not be able to hold it's own just like Finland or Sweden or Norway - f'rinstance - do and I see no reason why this should happen without Scotland losing many of it's positive ties with the rest of "the union".

I know that nationalism has generated bad feeling and even wars in the past but  is that not just because the countries that are holding tightly to the nation that is looking for freedom does not want to give this freedom.

So, I would like to ask the wise-ones here....Is the striving for such kinds of freedom a good or a bad thing and if it should not happen, why not ?
Regards....

I think it would be good for Scotland to be truly independant, at the moment you are in a form of limbo-neither fish nor fowl.

Scots and English are very different in our attitudes and I think our differences should be celebrated.

The break up of The United Kindom was inevitable, and devolution has played a big part, but I dont see the point in the devolution of Scotland and Wales if these two arent allowed to manage their own affairs regarding tax powers.

In my opinion devolution todate has merely been a devisery measure.

The devolution of power to Ireland Scotland and Wales was something that HAD TO come about eventually even although the "unionists" fought tooth and claw to stop it.

I guess it is all about emancipation and about when countries and nations are ready to deliver their own destiny.

The Act of Union of 1707 was a carve-up of power between the kings and the landed gentry at the time and the wishes of the people of the countries that were included were not served in the least at that time. NOW... we are getting back our own sovereignty and the ability to make our own way in the world and I am sure that eventually the frightened Tories, Labour and Lib Dems in Scotland will allow a referendum on the subject.

See this for interest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acts_of_Union_1707

Another question I often ask attached to this subject.....Should there also be English nationalism and why should the English in the North of the country not feel that they are being fairly dealt-with too as far as London is concerned ?
