 Excess Winter Deaths

During December 2008 and March 2009, 36,700 more individuals died in England and Wales during the winter months than at other times of the year. This represents a 49% increase on the 25,300 deaths in the previous period. The figure also represents the highest rate of excess winter deaths since 1999/2000.

You are obviously too young to remember that the last Labour Government in Britain was in the 70's under Harold Wilson and Barbara Castle.

This is a pet project of mine and I can say that throughout all of the years since 1985, ( Thatcher and Major were the Prime Ministers ), and right up until today, through all of these differring political philosophies, more and more elderly people have been dying from hypothermia each winter.

Right across the political spectrum this fact has been known and it is because of this fact that LABOUR introduced the cold-weather payment and the Winter Fuel Payments that some such lives HAVE been saved.

The Tories are planning to cut both of these payments as part of their cost-cutting exercises against the deficit and if they do we may find that the deaths from hypothermia among the elderly may start to rise once again.
Regards....

They aren't withdrawing them this winter, I've had my letter today saying I'm getting the winter fuel allowance.   I don't qualify for the cold weather payment, but I've not seen anything to say its being withdrawn.

Thursday, 18 November 2010 Winter Fuel Payment - getting paid
The Winter Fuel Payment is automatically given to those who have had their entitlement established. Find out what to do if you think your payment is incorrect or if you have concerns about the timing of your payment or cheque.
