"People power" CAN win !
« on: December 20, 2009, 12:27:54 PM »
It seems that the bonus culture of the banks and the corporations and the government departments and the NHS is now coming to a head - at least in Scotland.

A campaigner has started a one-man battle against the fat-cat bonus culture for Scotland's taxpayer-funded water chiefs.

Drew Cochrane has lodged a petition with the Scottish Parliament. Drew, who works for a local newspaper in Largs, said: "In these times of austerity it's crazy that these people are paid massive bonuses for keeping the water running".

The Petitions Committee last week agreed to write to The Scottish Government, Scottish Water and Consumer Focus Scotland after Mr Cochrane submitted the petition five weeks ago. There will also be a debate at Holyrood.

Cunningham North MSP Kenny Gibson said: "The system of public petitions shows how individual Scots can impact directly on public policy. It is democracy through the Scottish Parliamentary system working at it's best!"

I personally always get a buzz out of actions like this as they show that the person at the ground floor level - at least in Scotland - can directly effect policy at the very top if they want to.

I say that everywhere we see this bonus culture raising it's ugly head we should fight it in as many ways as we know how.

"People power" works but for it to work we need enough people willing to get off their backsides and do what needs to be done !

Well done that man and good luck to you with your petition I say !
Regards....

Bonuses were very common for the workers once. Some companies still operate these.

It is a matter of proportion and contract.

Millions of pounds of public money have been raked off the railways and utilities.

Look at Rover.

Without looking into it deeply - I would imagine that like all Water Providers - they
were once under State Control.

Once matters are private and under Directorship - they can do what they jolly well
like - but have to satisfy the shareholders. Otherwise they can be voted out.

This is how it works and no amount of petitions is going to change that.

Apart from a windfall tax - that just moves the goal posts. The bonuses get
bigger or paid in different ways (shares etc).

But that all said the quango Water Regulators should be fighting for the
consumer - not just putting their thumbs up to price hikes.
