Will the last pensioner to leave please turn off the lights
« on: December 30, 2009, 03:57:39 PM »
Having travelled and lived abroad since we retired in the year 2000, you get a lot of first hand information about pensioners in other countries and how they are treated both financially and within the community.
Sad to say here in our own country we are very poorly treated in both aspects.

Having returned to the UK some 4 years ago with the intention of staying period, we are finding it increasingly difficult to come to terms with the changes that have and are taking place almost every day.

Most of our Friends abroad think we are stupid to even consider staying here until the inevitable happens.
We are not well off, and so like many pensioners we try and make what money there is go a little further.

I do not think we mind that as much as the general prevailing attitude towards anyone who is over the age when it is considered they can be of no further use to society in general . Treated by all and sundry as if we no longer have the mental capacity required to be taken seriously on any issue.

A great many of the Friends that we knew here have finally had enough and have decided to leave for new horizons, even though like us they have strong emotional ties to their country of birth.

Should we all leave and let them just get on with it?

Yes it is so different in many countries throughout the World where
being old is surrounded by respect and understanding.

It is an opportunity to rob or abuse people in many parts of the UK.

Even this government join in with no provision from billions of pounds
of contribution to produce a decent pension.

The other difficulty is that you may have paid all your life for the NHS
and expect something back, particularly at this stage of life.

Always seem to want to know if you have a home to sell first...

I was very tempted to leave the UK some years back, but it would have meant uprooting my children from school at the time. Nowadays, my health would be an issue with going abroad permanently.

I can't help feeling that the cost of living would be better in another EU country.
