Thanks Pap.  bit of both really. A mate at work told me that he had seen them where he goes fishing so I staked it out for a couple of hours and sure enough this chap came and sat in the tree about twenty feet away! And I also have a Canon 300mm f2.8 with a 2X extender!

That super shot of a Kingfisher just shows that with a lot of patience and a little bit of luck photographing wildlife can be very rewarding !
