New site for seniors discounts !
« on: February 20, 2010, 12:34:13 PM »
I came across a new - to me - website that offers serious discounts to pensioners and I thought that I might highlight it here.

Do any of you know anything about this site and if you do, do you think that it might be worth registering for ?

http://www.seniorsdiscounts.co.uk/membership-1-column/discover-how-senior-citizens-in-the-uk-are-saving-money.html?gclid=CKfnrqy5_p8CFcIB4wod0QfQjw

Yes, it does sound like a bit of a marketing ploy but maybe it would be worth having a look at before we dismiss it eh ?

Comments please.....
Regards....

If its good or not I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Shop a round and you will get the same deals they will be offering. One thing for sure they will sell on your details to others.

Yes Hugh that is certainly one of the problems with registering for anything online. There is a growing market in personal information that the marketeers, ( as I call them ), use to target us and snow us under with bumf.

The trouble is that if we want to use ANY of the websites and avenues online available to us we are more or less forced to register with them. The only other choice is to be a "lurker", ( one who reads but never writes ), on the 'net.

While I agree with you that we can find many good discounts by searching around one-at-a-time for them ourselves it can be good when we let others "let their fingers do the walking" for us.

The rise and rise of the comparison websites proves that we are willing to let other people do the searching for us and while even they are worth the watching they can often be a good help to us and they CAN save us money when we have already decided to spend it anyway.

I don't think you could call me a lurker in any way shape or form. Just one one look at that site put me right off. It gave me a bad feeling, don't ask why, I can not explain it.

I have found over the years that it is a good and safe thing to rely on our instincts and whenever a thing sounds too good to be true it often is.

Having said that I also think that there are times when we have to be a bit brave if we are to find as many of the benefits that are out there that we might need and can use.

Sadly once we are registered to anything new to us on the internet and have given contact addresses or numbers it can often happen that these "marketeers" will use this information to make money out of us or bombard us with stuff that we neither want or need.

Just another of the traps on the internet I am afraid !

Then again if we quickly find that a certain website or company are targetting us we can register with the Telephone Preference Service (  TPS ) and/or the Mail Preference Service ( MPS ) and block this address from our e-mail client. ( Of course if these entities are foreign ones this might not always work ! ).

But, then again, as my old Irish grannie once said: "Faint heart never won fair lady !"  ;D

I mistakenly registered with this site and was inundated with emails for just about everything. Very quickly opted out!

I guess my feelings for this site were well founded, and I am pleased you have made this posting a warning to others to stay clear. PS I liked your PIC

Needless to say Hugh, one of my hobbies is wildlife photography!

The last foru  I joined went out of business through lack of interest so lets hope we can keep this one going! Only joined today! ;)

You will have to take up scuba diving like me it will take your wild life photography up to a new level.
You will find members on hear are also on Ripped off Britain forum so if this one folds there is a back up. At 70 I must be the oldest forum member if not, they are keeping a close secret of their age and not coming  forward to take my crown.

I was actually a Navy Shallow Water Diver for many years and also enjoyed scuba after I left but have no thoughts of going back into it. I'll stick with my photography and skiing and walking with dog and stone-age demonstrating and ambulance responding etc etc!!

Having dive as a ships diver it does rather take the glammer out scuba diving. I have never dived in cold murky water always clear warm blue waters which works out quite expensive traveling abroad to dive. My wife and I both have good pensions and we cleared all out standing bills before we retired. Must see if I can borrow or hire an underwater camera for my South African trip and hope to take a portray shot of a shark to place here. ;D ;D
