I think the problem is other airlines operate with less staff so in the end job cuts will have to be made, and the rest will be on short time until business builds up. The longer this strike goes on the worse it will be for them.
Apart from cheap flights I wonder what other perks they have which they haven't mentioned. If they are just on the minimum wage they must have other allowances to be able to live in London.
The BA staff have probably felt that as they were working with the most up-market airline in the world they should have similar upmarket wages and conditions and perks. As BA are no longer as "up-market" as it once was these workers are just going to have to realise that the kudos that comes with that BA uniform is no longer a badge of excellence and as such they must realise that their employer - BA - are now just the same as the rest.
If the BA workers do recognise that this IS the case then Walsh and his oh-so superior board members must admit it too.
As with all other employment situations BA are now going to have to realise that any movement in wages and conditions are going to have to be arrived at via NEGOTIATION and not bull-headed edict from on high.
Hugh.......The London thing is standard for all people who work and try to live in the city and the solution to this very high cost of living is dealt with via what is called "London weighting" whereby there is a special percentage tacked on to serve this peculiarly high cost of living.
As international flight cabin crews often have to live in such very expensive cities all around the globe this "perk" ( which everybody, including the board-members get ), is not actually seen as such as it is simply a way to handle extra costs incurred in major cities around the world.
