How do you think the head-to-head debate went ?
« on: April 16, 2010, 01:17:21 PM »
I don't know how interested any of you here are in political discussion groups but as I feel that the first head-to-head "clash" between the three leaders of the most powerful parties in British government took place historically on ITV last night, this discussion might be worth debating here.

I will start shall I ?

OK, while I admit that I am biased against Cameron and Brown and a bit biased FOR Nick Clegg, I thought that even although the head-to-head was a bit too contrived and artificial-looking it did show these men in a whole different light than we see them in Westminster Prime Minister's question time.

I did think that Brown repeated himself a bit too much, Cameron looked out of his depth for most of the debate and while Clegg was obviously nervous during this debate he looked like the best performer there.

Don't you agree ?

Please see my reply to your previous post "who do you believe". It's basically the same question as this one!

I did  think Mr Clegg was the best of the bunch but as the Liberal Democrats have not run a country for 80 years? do they have the necessary experience to do the job.  Although Mr Brown is a bit lacklustre he as run the country for the passed few years and seems to have averted a slump as we remember in the 1930's.

No it's not CC !

I am asking about your opinion of Nick Clegg as a debater and a man here and I was asking for responses to the video-viewer of the manifesto of the Liberal Democrats over there.

These points and questions are different !

Hi Pharri......

I think that the answer to your question is that it might be a good point that the Liberal Democrats are not stuck in the same rut as the big two are and if they come up with enough seats to become power-brokers I am sure that the other experienced politicians will keep them on their toes.

Brown is a basically good man and because of this point I have supported him here many times against the baying pack. I just think that a four year period in power is quite long enough for ANY political party as after twelve or thirteen years they are going to get bogged down with semantics rather than concentrating on what WE want.

Papaumau, The head to head was in my view a media circus.

Nothing fundamental policy wise was stated, however Nick Clegg came out best.

There was an interesting article about the claims made in this 'debate'

I say debate because they were only answering set questions from a mute audience.

The second 'debate' will be far more interesting as lessons learnt from the first one
will be put into effect.

While I agree Ivanhoe, that the  debate was a bit of a "media circus" I think it was formulated like that so that the debate would not fall into chaos with too much argument from the audience.

I do think that they got across most of their basic manifesto points even if some of them, particularly Brown, repeated himself a bit.

John.....

I thought it interesting that the link you provided was to the Torygraph newspaper !

DO NOT expect any unbiased reporting from that tome !

I too will be watching the second and final head to head collisions on the BBC and on Sky with great interest.

Papaumau, Nick Clegg's comments in the head to head concerning our outdated political system was spot on, plus the British tax systerm is weighed againsat the ordinary man and woman on the street.

But you see, our free market enterprise culture demands low income tax on the rich, while the rest of us support the rich via stealth taxes and local council tax increases.

The only thing to do then in that situation is to vote LIB DEM as they are the only party that have promised to soak the rich in order to try to narrow that rich/poor divide.

I believe that New-Labour are now so confused about what they stand for that they don't really know what to do for the ordinary people of Britain any more. The Tories certainly don't !

Papaumau, I dont think New Labour are confused, I think they knew this day would come 13 years on from 1997 when New Labour took on fundamental right wing policy.  Thatcherism.

What annoys me, for want of a better word, is the media's constant brainwashing at calling New Labour,  Labour, and Cameron's refusal to admit New Labour are fundamentally right wing, because New Labour arent a Labour Government, they have taken on Thatcher's fundamental policies from 1997, and they have brought off millions of British people by way of means tested handouts.

Looks like the debate as done the Lib Dem's a lot of good and if they continue with the good work they could well come out on top. Nick's got my vote, he seem to be sending out a feel good factor with many voters. Made the election very interesting.

So long as WE know that New-Labour are just ersatz copies of the Tories that is all that matters. I think that the media treat us a bit like mushrooms: kept in the dark and fed s**t !

We are better'n that !

Hugh....

As I said somewhere else: one opinion-polling group already have the LIB DEMS running second with the New-Labourites in third place.

If it was not for the FPTP system of voting I am sure that the Lib Dems could be showing in first place.

Papa I don't really take much notice of poles I know that one two have given the top spot to the Lib Dems but I wouldn't put money on what they say. I just have that feeling that the Lib Dems are going to do very well. We are getting nothing new, out of new labour and the cons have really gone off the boil. The next debate going to be very interesting.
