Yes Hugh I'm a real old timer a child of the thirties whence we were taught thrift diligence and to look after ourselves

Hi Avalonmpk I was also a child of the thirties but only just, and I agree 100% with what you have said. When I left the forces 1984 I had a choice to make live for today or for tomorrow I thankfully chose tomorrow and can now enjoy my retirement and not have to moan how little our pension is. I gave up drinking and smoking which I really enjoyed at the time and put the money aside. I worked long hours 60 or more hours a week on less than the now minimum wage but its all been worth while. My elder brother, my brother and sister in law all died before reaching retirement age so there is something to be said for living for today but you shouldn't moan if you have nothing in the pot when retired. We were left nothing by our parents so every thing we have we earned. Every one will just have to live within their means because no matter how much you moan it will make little difference. Brown reduce your private pension and if it hadn't been for Wilson mine would have been higher, but still, not to worry we can do nothing about it.

Hi. I retired 2 years ago after working full time for 40 years and bringing up 3 children, my Husband left me to cope alone, I paid full stamp all those years and Tax and struggled to keep head above water so tOok up part time work as well at week-ends while my sister looked after my children. I recieved no income from my Husband and he had moved in with his other woman who spent all his money, no government helped me, and now all I get is £114 pension to live off each week with all bills as any other person and I struggle severly to survive......NOW THATS POLITICS

Ivanhoe - What a sad man you must be always blaming someone else - perhaps its where you live  - move to the countryside listen to the birds sing smell the perfumes of nature -  real life - see mother nature at her best  No socialism here if birds want to feed and bring up their young they work hard and long

Your posting has to be the most naive ive ever read.  The law of the jungle applies to nature, and this is exactly what Britain has become.
