If the unions leaders pay stop as well as the members he may work harder to get a settlement even before any strike action took place. At the moment they just enjoy plenty of time on television with no worries of loss of pay. Great job to have.

Hugh....That is exactly the point mate; these union officials - by being paid a good salary - are able to fight on without having to worry about whether the mortgage is going to be paid or not.
This pressure on strikers helps to force them back to work even when they feel they are right about the reasons for striking. Strike pay is supposed to help a bit in this respect but any worker that goes on strike KNOWS that they can only do it for a finite time or they may starve and get kicked out of their homes if they go too long without a pay..
The union leaders have to be protected from this threat so that they can keep on fighting on behalf of their membership.
