Do we in Britain take our democracy for granted ?
« on: August 04, 2010, 10:41:18 AM »
When I saw a photo today of Kenyan citizens queueing up to vote in their new constitution ballot this made me think that a lot of the people in Britain are so used to democracy being so easy that we have become jaundiced at it.

I know that many Brits are disenchanted with politics in this country when government after government always seem to be just in it for themselves and promises made in manifestos often go unfulfilled, but surely if we took a much healthier look at politics in general we would see that we get who we deserve when we do not get off our lazy bottoms and get out and vote.

Apathy rules in many Western states simply because many of us just do not take an interest in what goes on in government. Maybe it would be good for us if democracy was not so easily delivered and we too were made to queue to lay our little crosses.

Papaumau, The British are largely self centred, politically ignorant, and apathetic to their fellows.

Our politicians know this.

So the answer to your question is yes, Democracy is not only taken for granted in this country, it's totally wasted.

Again you are stereotyping a "large" part of British society !

You may be right in this, but I think it would be hard to define in any detail how many of the British voters are like that.

Politics in Britain since the war has been slowly going downhill in quality as more and more politicians do seem to be in it just for what they can make and that is bad for politics in general.

I am sure that many politicans understand why many people are so jaundiced about politics and if they want to hold on to their seats they are going to have to work harder for their constituents in the future.

It is just a shame that there is not more places like this and R.O.B. where people can get such complaints off their chests.

I did tell you about this before but I am happy to do it again......

If you look at the initials of the title on the banner below they spell R.O.B. and that is a curious and fitting acronym for what we do at that website.

Many of the people who come to R.O.B. do so because they have been "robbed" of human rights or cash or respect.
