Always drink from the other side of the cup.. just in case..!
I still follow this rule ..just in case it hasn't been washed up properly..
Everything will be alright in the end, and if it’s not alright, its not the end.

Scrumpy I did not get it from my mother, but my late wife washed almost everything before cooking or serving it, fruit. vegetables, sausages, bacon, the lot,  I have continued to follow her example, I think it came from her younger days working for Sainsbury's and seeing what happened to stuff before it was sold.

zoony, Yeah I know that's what they say, but I still do it but make sure I wash the dish well after washing the chicken,  to make sure any cross contamination is not present,

:) :)   Oh no! I've never thought of that.

I always wash uncooked chicken before preparing / cooking it. and then wash any knives or utensils that I've used.

Never sit on a strange toilet seat, at least put paper around it.  Some sense in that one.

My dad used to say "you can't go rung if you bung."
Smoking kills you, bacon kills you, smoking bacon cures it.

We always washed raw chickens, but the advice lately says not to.  http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/homehygiene/Pages/Washing-chicken-can-cause-campylobacter-food-poisoning.aspx

I didn't get any instructions about cooking - just stuff about not sitting on the step as it may cause piles and similar.

The stuff I was told may not have been all that factually correct but at least it was comprehensible....

"you can't go rung if you bung."  What? I've thought about it. I've tried googling it. I'm still entirely clueless about what was meant. Perhaps recreational chemicals were involved?
