Latest DIY project..
« on: May 17, 2017, 09:12:01 AM »
While Mrs.T and the girls are away enjoying themselves, I've been doing a bit of DIY that I've had on the 'back burner' for ages.  It's a new fire surround - very plain in a sort of 'Adam' style.  It's built of solid American white oak.  This house dates from the 1830's, so not much is straight and level.  I had to cut and shape pieces to fit round the wobbly bits of the original fireplace.  Note that it sits into the thickness of the wall which overall is about 3 foot thick.

I will get round to replacing the hearth surround which is made of Ash,  with a matching oak one.

Also in picture,  our pet spider,  "Spid".

Well done!
This post is my opinion, which you may not like, but I'm entitled to it.

It is beautiflu, but I think you should keep the ash in front of the fire.

Thanks for the comments.. Above the fire doesn't get hot.  You can't see it, but above the fire is a large triangular slab of sandstone.  This room is on the first floor and so nearly 200 years ago, it must have been fun lifting it up to this level.  4 rooms had fireplaces, but this is the only one in use.  There is a disused one in our bedroom and we used to get starlings falling down the chimney.  I made a little door in the wall to rescue them.
