Just noticed this about dogs with short expected lives.

There is a collie in our close who is 14 and another 16 and they are both part of the guard dog teem.
The dogs give them a little less work as they are both over 100 in animal years but they still bark if there is a stranger in the Close.

We have a Cavalier King Charles.
She is as much use a guard dog as a teapot made of chocolate.
Milly loves anything and everyone. The most gentle dog I have ever known.
She is over 9 now, and alas on borrowed time, as she has a few health issues.
Please dont tell her!
I have discovered that I am the same age as old people

You can eat a chocolate tea pot.
How about an ashtray on a motorbike?.

The dogs in my close all have a good bark at about 6.30am.
Some pensioners moved ion to the street and we decided to have a word with them and ask if the barking is ok.
Suddenly their dog appeared from the back.

That's a sure sign that the dogs are stressed.

The article is spot on regarding Irish Wolfhounds.  One of ours was a few months off 8 years, and the other one week over 8 years. Wolfhound people thought we had done well.  We knew of many who died younger and a tiny few who made it to 9 years. Large dogs leave a really large gap. You believe you can keep them going because they stay "young" and then they just die.
