I am 57 and gently working my way towards being a pensioner;
although, having no savings worth mentioning and not being eligible
for a GB pension until I'm 67 I may pop my clogs first.

My wife and I intend to retire to our house in Scotland (we currently live and work in Bulgaria, my wife's country),
and, having been out of Scotland for 16 years now we know almost nothing about what it is like being a pensioner
there except for going to dances in my kilt.

  Is that close?

Not quite:

Only if you speak Gaelic; an ah disnae thole til the Erse, an Ahm aye forjeskit qhan a scunner
o a sudroner has tae tel me ma ain kintra's ways.

'Only if you speak Gaelic: and I don't have the Irish, I'll be buggered before I'll let some blackguard or Southerner tell me my own country's ways..'

You deserve a lot of credit for the bit after the 'Irish.'  :)

Perhaps easier as I know Erse is Irish. Otherwise I'd think it's easier seeing it written than spoken to understand. I'm rarely troubled too much by accents, however strong but there are exceptions though I'm rather cloth-eared with languages. Despite speaking it with a Mexican accent my spoken Spanish is quite good but my comprehension not so much.

What I would like to know is, why he assumed I was a Southerner in the first place ??? . As I was the person that statement was first flung at..

It was probably your "tone of writing", Raven.

Let's kiss (electronically) and make up.  :)

Mind you, Thurso is south of Herston.  8)

fair enough if not far enough
being a Scot myself might i point out
that the border defines the Scots from the English
but being further north in no way makes you 'more' Scottish
and may i further point out that to 99% of Scots
erse dont mean Irish  ;D ;D ;D
