Asperger's and me.
« on: Oct 18, 2017, 04:20:16 PM »
Did anyone watch Chris Packham, Asperger's and me?  It was a fascinating insight into this condition and how the sufferer and those around them are affected.  It was a bit disturbing to see how some in the US were trying to "cure" the condition,  while other more enlightened organisations such as Microsoft,  were working to accommodate workers with Asperger's because of the unique talents they often had.

You'll have had your tea.

That sounds really interesting Traveller.  So much more understanding these days but a long way to go still.

Yes I did watch Aspergers and me Traveller.  it's a condition most cannot understand, nature takes away but gives a gift in exchange I think.

I recorded it & have just finished watching it & I agree it was fascinating.

I could identify with a lot of what he said, such as not needing people & never going to parties or socialising etc.

Like him, I also prefer the company of animals to most people & animals seem to like my company.

The problem's you describe may not be Aspergers crabbyob and Phil, but if you feel it may be it would be worth getting a proper diagnosis - even at this stage as you may be able to be taught some very simple tools that make life feel more comfortable.

One of my friends home-schools her grandson who does have Aspergers and he was thrilled with the programme.  I was lovely to hear how he kept saying "he's like me".  My friend always uses these things as an opportunity for education and it sounds as if they ended up struggling with Chris Packham's description that he felt like he was the 'black sheep' of the family.

I always talk to animals, often much to the amusement of their owners.

When I was doing investigations I once had to visit a large club before opening hours.

As I walked in a voice shouted "stand still, the dog's in the room", at which point a huge German Shepherd dog rushed at me but it had a toy in it's mouth.

I merely grabbed the toy & threw it for the dog to fetch, which it did, several times after that.

The owner said he'd wouldn't have believed it if he hadn't seen it.

Quite recently there was a Staffie type dog tied up outside Morrisons & another Staffie had walked past & bitten the dog that was tied up after they'd had a brief go at each other.

The tied up Staffie got a cut face & was bleeding & shaking so I spoke to it & then knelt down & held tissue paper over the cut until the owner came out.

None of the other customers would go anywhere near it.

I know of a few children with Aspergers.  Sadly, sometimes parents are loathe to acknowledge it and at first are in denial. Nowadays though it's become more talked about and accepted, the same with OCD.
