It was Frank McGrath, I'm informed. Gabby Hayes was in a fair few John Wayne films, I know that and Dr Google informs me that he has TWO stars on Hollywood Boulevard....

Don't remember that - but I do remember (could it have been children's hour - I think it was a programme which ended with eerie music and a sepulchral voice intoning 'the wolves are running'.

As long as you're not feeling Paul Young you'll be fine.

Well remember Michael "The Man in Black" with Valentine Dyall.  Used to sit, hunched up near the radio biting my nails in fearful fascination at the horrors being narrated in his eerie sepulchral voice and then lie in bed with the blankets pulled over my head.  Had I known at that tender age the house was reputed to have been haunted, I learned later in life, I would have been doubly scared!  My mother saw a little old lady sitting on her bed one day and in the early hours on another occasion, when I had left home, the chairs from the dining set had been overturned with a resounding crash for no earthly reason.  My dear old dad, a 14th Army Burma Veteran refused to even go downstairs to investigate "I've heard worse than that in my time!" he said "Might be earth tremors."

I don't remember listening to any radio shows, (am i one of the youngest on these forums?) On a sunday we always had '2 way family favourites' on while the dinner was being prepared, followed by 'the billy cotton band show' while it was being cleared away. Wakey waaaaaaa keyyyyyyy! and i think his signature tune was called 'somebody stole my girl' ?

Did you used to record pick of the pops with alan freeman and try and cut off the end of the song before he started talking to us "pop pickers!", i had a grundig reel to reel tape recorder and have to set the microphone up in front of our radio and keep very quiet as any sound I'd make would also be recorded! After potp it was 'sing something simple' so I'd always tune into radio luxemburg. They played all the chart hits and oldies but the reception was always apalling!
