Roll Ups (not fags!)
« on: Mar 24, 2011, 10:32:45 PM »
This is a lady style post, although I do understand chaps, about male vanity  ::) Recently, I have been going under a dryer with a full set of rollers, my hair has grown skinny with age and a blow dry just doesn't do the trick anymore, so in an attempt to not look like my Gran's floor mop, I have regressed to the 60's - fortunately, my hairdresser understands the problem.

Have looked on the Southampton hairdresser's site for sympathetic salon, loads of whom appear accomplished in hair extensions, no thanks; do nail talons, yuk; and also the latest of cutting edge styles, scary; colourists, errmm, quite happy with what I have thanks. Any recommendations welcomed for an old fashioned roll up job.

Ha ha -  ;D Southampton is the nearest town to where I will be, other than Winchester. Please enlighten me re Wessex, is it real? I thought it was a made up place, by order of HM in order to confer a camelot title on one of her more retarded offspring...

My great grandfather was an admiral of the fleet - my brother was in command of the first mega super tanker, having joined the Merchant Navy after deciding the Royal Navy was elitist, my daughter was a sea cadet, and hand picked to escort one of our Governer's from UK to Guernsey. My only claim to fame is that, up to now, I have never been seasick. I am more than sure that I can circumnavigate the odd Pompey "queen", if needs be.

As for the accent and dialect, I quite like the Hampshire burr, "Saff'ampton" is more along the lines of Essex speak. I am quite proficient in Guernsey speak and dialect, if anyone wants to know any.  :)

Wessex is the ancient kingdom of the West Saxons that defeated its rivals and created England. The counties of Essex, Middlesex and Sussex remain with us to recall the East, Mid and South Saxons that Wessex conquered but when King Edgar of Wessex was crowned as the first King of England in Bath in 973, Wessex, the dominant and most civilised of the Anglo-Saxon states, ceased to be a government entity.

The area with which Destination Wessex is concerned was recognised in the early ninth century when the four West Saxon shires, now Counties, were created. The name of each reflected the name of the town on which the surrounding shire was dependent. They were:
West Saxon Shire    Shire Town    Present County
Dornsaete    Dorchester    Dorset
Somersaete    Somerton    Somerset
Wiltunscir    Wilton    Wiltshire
Hamtunscir    Southampton    Hampshire
In 1066, the Normans came to conquer and brought great changes with them. The name of Wessex fell into the background but the area remained important in the flow of English history. The concentration of its heritage with us now, bears witness to this!

As for accents in southampton , well it has a large immigrant population  , so many , many accents can be heard.!
Where are you actually settling down ?

Very interesting, thanks - and without wishing to denigrate, very much a camelot now. I visited Winchester years ago and saw, what I think, was the original Knights of Round Table circle.

No wonder HM chose Wessex as a title for her last born, his penchant for dressing up in 'days gone by' gear at a previous reality fiasco tells it all.

I am going to roost in Bitterne Park area, have a 6 month lease which will be a stepping stone toward buying a house. This is a first footing back into UK, and will give me time to take stock of where I would like to live. My horizon could be a lot wider than Soton.
