Niki Lauda Undergoes Lung Transplant

Niki was F1 World Champion three times in the 70s and 80s. In those days F1 was far more dangerous than today but actually had far more racing than today's rather dull version. Niki nearly died (in fact he was given the last rites) and was badly burned in a crash in Nurbergring. His comeback and battle with James Hunt featured in the film "Rush" although it features too much artistic licence in my opinion. Niki has had a number of health issues and has had two kidney transplants. He was taken ill with severe lung disease during  a short break in Ibiza and underwent a lung transplant in Vienna yesterday. I wonder if it was related to the lung damage he suffered all those years ago. I am sure you would like to join me in wishing him a full and speedy recovery.

Never been a F1 fan but I remember the name. I'd wish anybody well who had to undergo radical surgery.

Me too. It seems so long ago that I was surprised to see that he is only 69

Nicki Lauda had been discharged from hospital nearly three months after his lung transplant. Although he has been in contact with Lewis Hamilton and other members of the Mercedes F1 team he will need a period of rehab before returning to the pit wall.

Sadly Niki is back in intensive care after contacting flu. He was struggling to regain a measure of physical fitness so  he could return to the F1 paddock. Sadly it looks like it will not be anytime soon although I am sure the end of winter will help. As they say in Austria "Gute Besserung Niki"!

If anybody can beat odds, it's Nikki Lauda. I assume the historical lung-scarring became problematic though I imagine they've been arranging it all for a long time. I'd think that getting back to the pit-wall will be the biggest driver towards his recovery.

Oh, I do hope he pulls through - one of sports greats, even for somebody like me with no real interest in F1
