I prefer self-service tills because I don't have to wait behind somebody who insists on packing their shopping away before realising that they have to pay and then digging out their purse/wallet and then finding the right card etc. etc.   and then putting their card neatly away and then putting their purse/wallet neatly away and then checking that everything is neatly packed before shifting their backsides and letting someone else get served.

I also wish the checkout operator would start checking out the next customer as soon as the previous one had paid.  This is quite normal on the continent and it's a lot faster than the UK.

Don't use them on principle - they do folk out of work

That was the rumour when self scan tills were introduced at the store I worked in......and no one lost their jobs.

Same here, I never use the self-service, and while it's an option I never will.

Well, W H Smith at Ninewells Hospital used to have three staff. It now has one, and I doubt they are alone.

I can only speak of my experience when I worked for Morrisons.

Morrisons still have staff on hand to help/advise people using self service..
Everything will be alright in the end, and if it’s not alright, its not the end.

Where possible I use a manned (or womaned) check out as use of the self scanning machine means one less manned (or womaned) outlet.  There was a campaign at one time in the USA I understand to boycott the use of the self service scanners to preserve staff jobs?

I use to hate doing a shift on the self scan tills, standing for 5 hours and then taking a lot of crap from customers.

Morrisons never did do away with staff because of the self scan tills.

I have just been on my Speed Awareness Course after missing a speed sign last April.  It was speeding 4 am on a motorway where the speed limit went from 70mph to 40mph without warning and the temporary sign was at road level where the other signs were all on a bridge over the road.  So, naturally, because I was concerned about where I was going I was looking up there.  I worked out that to read 5 unlit signs of that size at 70mph I had less than half a second, let alone moving my sight line from about 4m down to 1m.  I imagine if they had put the speed sign a few metres further down the road, away from other signs I might well have seen it.

That's why the speed limit is in place - to give you enough time to read all the signs.

Then the speed limit sign should have been 100m in front of the bridge!
