Spooky
« on: Aug 13, 2018, 05:21:28 PM »
I've got an old marble clock that hasn't worked for over 30 years, I leave it on the sideboard as I like the look of it.     Today, I thought to myself 'where's that ticking coming from'   lo and behold the old clock had started ticking on its own   8) Anyone ever heard of this happening before, or can offer an explanation ?

No explanation but we had a cuckoo clock that stopped running which we tried periodically over maybe a year or more that suddenly ran again when tried and has been going at least a couple of years now.

It's mostly muck that stops them but unless it was a minor earth tremor or just jolting what it stood on that set it going again I can't guess.

A common cause of the clock stopping is when the two hands move on the spindle & slightly touch each other & then it can only take very small vibrations, even over a long period of time, such as having been moved for dusting, to suddenly start again.

It would be very uncommon for a mechanical faulty to suddenly rectify itself.

The old clock never lies! You mark my words, and I'll mark yours.

At least now it has stopped again it will be correct more often than if it was running - twice a day  :)

Alex. I was watching an Antiques Roadshow just now and a lady, who hated ticking clocks, told a story of a visitor coming to stay overnight and that evening a large schoolroom clock, which was on the wall and which hadn't been wound in years suddenly started ticking. Sure enough, next morning the visitor was found to be dead.

Had it fallen off the wall and crowned him?
