Profumo affair
« on: Aug 31, 2018, 03:59:47 PM »
I read somewhere that the BBC are planning to make a new series about  Christine Keeler & John Profumo. I remember it well. Such a pretty girl with a sad life. It ruined Profumos career & his life.
Such a big sex scandal. Compare it to today & Trumpy's sex misbehaviors? How does he get away with it?

I can't believe anybody could be surprised at revelations re the rich and powerful. There've always been those who've used such positions to indulge in amoral behaviour. I suspect a certain amount of the outrage might be down to envy.

Envy, Probably, just read the history of these people who set our laws, and set (standards) ? The present crowd are a fine example,

She moved to Australia, not sure if still alive unlike Christine. I never thought Mandy very attractive. Her life apparently wasn't that bad.

It's Mandy Rice-Davies actually, she died in Dec 2014 aged 70, coined the phrase - “Well, he would say that, wouldn’t he?”
Christine Keeler passed away the same month last year, aged 75.

I remember how shocked we were about the affair. Poor Profumo was finished in politics maybe kicked out, who knows. After politics Profumo did charity work cleaning out toilets. Not sure if that is factual or not, surely not. How very naive we all were in the sixties.

Now a days totally] different storys. Mistresses, gay, lesbians, who cares any more?

Spare a thought for Dr.Stephen Ward, another central figure in the affair.  He committed suicide  in 1963.
You'll have had your tea.

You are right Traveller, I forgot about him. Silly man to end his life like that. Why I wonder, after all, he did not commit a crime even in those days it was not a crime. Just goes to show how much innocence we all had in the sixties. Thanks again Traveller

Where national security concerns rightly came into the equation was because Miss Keeler was a mutual friend of a Russian attache and Mr P was the Minister for Defence and this was at the height of the cold war.  He to his credit, atoned for his laxity later in life by the good works he did for the needy.

Yes, it was during the Cold War & he Profumo a defense minister. Thanks for that John. I wonder if by today's standards people would react the same way, I bet not.
