I was in a shop the other day where one set of shelves was Halloween and another was Christmas. I've already heard summer holiday adverts on the radio.

I noticed this morning that Aldi had their luxury mince pies for sale. Best before date was early November, no point in stocking up for Christmas then.

I wouldn't bother stocking up but best before on mince pies is something I'd happily ignore.

M&S mince pies are yummy.. I only buy them for the Christmas period.. Along with Stones Ginger Wine.. The taste IS Christmas.
Everything will be alright in the end, and if it’s not alright, its not the end.

Yes Christmas  all those years ago was magical though I do remember being really pee'd off by being dragged to the Kirk if it was on a Sunday!  Even when my own children were young it was something special.
Halloween too - when you saved up your pennies to buy "squibs" - remember jumping jacks and creating ballistic missiles by sticking a banger into the top of a cheap rocket.?

Now it's all commercialised.  I'm a Humanist wondering why people still believe all this talk of a baby in a manger and why we don't celebrate the Solstice as a public holiday instead.  Still that doesn't stop me celebrating the Solstice AND the 25th Dec!
It's a fairly low key affair now.  A minimally decorated tree and usually a small  log decorated with holly , ivy , mistletoe and coloured candles as a table centrepiece.

You'll have had your tea.

We enjoyed a lot of social and religious activities around the festive season with our local church.  My wife, at that time my young lady, self and a number of friends were in the choir and now we miss those far off days.  Before the big day, the choir would spend a couple of weeks carolling around the streets, knocking on doors and collecting for the NSPCC.  I every recall one year 1952 perhaps? when for a change we collected for the RSPCA.  The oldest of us who was over eighteen entered a local pub and when announced he was collecting for the RSPCA, an Irish imbiber therin, averred loudly and emphatically "Young man, how dare you.  I have never subscribed to the IRA in my life!"  We hope to attend the Christmas Eucharist this year and we think of all those relatives and friends of former days who are sadly no longer with us to celebrate Christ's birth.

Worry when it gets shorter - it means your memory is failing :(
