Really rousing songs
« on: Sep 30, 2018, 07:41:29 PM »
I happened by chance on a really inspiring performance of the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ performed by the US Filed Army Band (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy6AOGRsR80) and it set me to thinking of really rousing songs (as opposed to instrumental or orchestral pieces). In no particular order I really like: -
The Battle Hymn of the Republic
Jerusalem
Rule Britannia
Men of Harlech
La Marseillaise
Land of Hope and Glory
Dixie
Heart of Oak

What are others favourites? Oh, and I do wish we had ‘Rule Britannia’ or ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ as our National Anthem rather than ‘God Save the Queen/King’ - much more inspiring to my ears.

I think you have got to have an antidote to rousing/patriotic songs try

Just think of the thousands of young men that went "over the top" a hundred years ago singing the "rousing songs" !!!!

Well not all that much of an antidote - the first one I gave up on after about 10 seconds - just an unpleasant noise - and have you read what Guthrie has written on his guitar. Don't think many men, young or old went over the top to 'Jerusalem', 'Land of Hope and Glory' 'Heart of Oak'. I used to know some folk who went over the top (all long gone now, of course) in WW1 and it certainly wasn't to any of those pieces of music.

From the first post, I love The Battle Hymn of the Republic - especially by the Mormon choir - and Men of Harlech is another big favourite.  I always wait for that bit in the film Zulu.

On the pop side David Bowie's Heroes always stirs something in me.

And the one below, has been a long time anthem for me, one which I have rediscovered over the last year or so.  I think it is all the "men feeling like women" that brought it to mind.  It is Helen Reddy I Am Woman [hear me roar].  If the following vid works out it is worth a watch because there are some great pictures.   The lyrics are great for women as well.

Did not Ivor Emmanuel mutter to Neil McCarthy in the film Zulu, when they were singing "Men of Harlech" and the Zulus were swarming "Why don't they sing something they know!"  Incidentally and purely as an aside, I knew the late Neil McCarthy at school, a gentlemanly lad.
