Talking Ts
« on: Oct 21, 2018, 10:55:38 PM »
Just watching Sky news and notice yet again the removal of T from our language ie.real-ie,  abou-. Impor-ant, tha-,Bri-ain, trea-ed, bu-, shouldn-, and that is just one person on the news program. Why?

Learned speech I guess YB. Part of the sudden spread of Estuary English has somehow incorporated the glottal stop. I don't like it either.

Zoony,
Way behind the times you are, Zoony.
My granddaughters, only seven, at school are learning about coordinating, subordinating, and correlative conjunctions.  Grammar is now more firmly back on the curriculum in all schools, and a good thing too.
I'd have been able to spot a conjunction, but wouldn't have known about the coordinating, subordinating, correlative stuff.  The granddaughters have explained them all to me, so better late than never.
Here's a test: give three sentences which exemplifies the use of each kind.

We were actually talking of commonly spoken English BP.

When I'm watching the TV the only criteria I have is being able to understand what's being said.

Accents, pronunciation & grammatical correctness are of no relevance to me.

Grammar and pronunciation are distinctly different and the topic as started has little to do with grammar. It clearly diverged.

We were clearly talking about pronunciation which is part of spoken grammar.

Zoony,
What might be the difference between spoken grammar and written grammar?
