Retirees on the New State Pension will receive £168.60 a week in the new tax year, while those on the Old State Pension will get £129.20.

It's a brilliant system, get a pension of £168.60 per week for paying NI for 30 (now 35) years or get a pension of £129.20 per week for paying NI for 44 years if your a man or 39 years for a woman.

I missed out by a year and so did my wife. I checked if deferring by a year would give me the new pension. It wouldn't and the increase given for deferring made it not worth doing imo. Gits.

I think it's a very innovative scheme & probably the only one in the world which requires you to pay less into it in order to get more out of it.

I think some were actually worse off though. I opted out and my excess NI payments went into a private scheme but I have an idea that the new setup can pay less than some would have got on the old one plus there is probably some scam which removes some of the benefits those only getting the basic payment would have been able to claim.

Once I found I couldn't get the higher payment I lost interest but I do recall there were gripes and accusations of cheating by the government.

The 'more for less' figures I quoted assumed that the qualifying years had been met but the figures will be different for those who haven't paid in for the full number of years.

However, they'll get a reduced basic pension which'll immediately be more than compensated by pension credits & other freebies.

I know of a case where someone did not work the full qualifying years but he had occupational pension amounting to over £30k. Does that mean he will qualify for freebies.

I was discussing the State Pension qualifying years.

If someone never works a day in their life & wins the Euromillions the day they reach retirement age, they won't get Pension Credit & all the freebies either.

Isn't that discrimination?

It must feel like discrimination to those who paid in for 45 years to get less out than those who paid in for 30 / 35 years.  :D

Well that'll be most here.

It's the winter fuel allowance that tickles me. Introduced for purely political reasons by Brown, never increased, and the cheeky sods were suggesting a while back that if somebody didn't need it they could opt out or something. I forget the detail as I was laughing too much.

I have paid in for 45 years and only receive basic pension --we manage but it does annoy me when I see the workshy claiming  for everything.

That annoys me. I get my occupational pension and only my basic pension. I think people should get what they paid in so if they only paid in enough to get £5 per week that is all they should get.
