The doctor (Trevor Howard) borrows the car from a medical colleague who expresses his disapproval when he discovers the former had borrowed it for an assignation and jaunt into the countryside with a married lady (Celia Johnson).  How attitudes and morals have changed!

I agree John but I think we'd have to admit that it was rather an idealised view of life at that time and nostalgia is a powerful force. I'd put 50p on you remembering where you first saw it and who you were with at the time..?

Can't recall where or when I first saw "Brief Encounter" zoony.  I admit my main interest in the film was the railway atmosphere.  Quite a few familiar supporting actor/actress faces, Cyril Raymond, Stanley Holloway, Joan Hickson.  Not really much of a storyline, the "heroine" remained true to her husband in the end which, I suppose, was right for the time.

"Right for it's time" describes it beautifully. I thought it a little tedious. At least stuff happens in 'Random Harvest'.

"Random Harvest" was a very touching film and only a fictional story I agree but I could not quite accept the premise that a field officer with the rank of Major could not somehow have been identified, particularly one such from the upper classes as portrayed by Ronald Coleman.  Terrible and confusing things do happen in horrendous conflict such as WW1 and we have to take into account this was a Hollywood production about a British family.  Perhaps, who knows, Ronald Coleman himself an Englishman who was wounded in WW1 could probably see the flaws in the story, who knows?

In such films one suspends disbelief for the sake of the story....

I'd never hear of 'Random Harvest' until this thread - sounds much of the genre, but far more complicated, than 'Brief Encounter'

spot on young Zoony
am i the only one here who regularly 'suspends disbelief'
i lay on my bed look and listen to the fan, and 'drift and dream'
cant you remember riding home on your horse after watching Roy Rogers
ok perhaps that might not be a good idea today, but come... 'imagine'

British films at that time were not that popular, it was all Hollywood even though some really classic movies were made with good english actors. David Lean was a great British director who made some really good movies Hollywood style for example Lawrence of Arabia just one.

Joan Hicks was not in Brief Encounter perhaps you are thinking of Joyce Carey.
Was n0t keen on Random Harvest.
