Something I heard on the radio
« on: Nov 06, 2018, 09:23:19 PM »
Heard this on the radio the other day and thought it worth repeating.

When Dickens completed The Thirty Nine Steps it was initially serialised  in two newspapers. It was the Bicester Times and the Worcester Times...

I'm sure that is wrong - shouldn't it have been Buchan's Nicholas Nickleby?

The pun is on the opening line of Tale of Two Cities. "It was the best of times and the worst of times.." Bicester (pronounced 'Bister') and Worcester (pronounced 'Wurster')..

I am a bit confused because I just recently watched The 39 Steps movie written by John Buchan. directed by Alfred Hitchcock. A jolly good thriller with Robert Donat playing the lead. A far cry from Dicken's novels, by the way my favourite author..
