Which one of these two did you like best? I know they were filmed years apart. Just curious!

Searching For Private Ryan gets my vote.

I can't say I had a favourite sns as said it was long ago. Only one war film made a lasting impression on me and that was "The Deer Hunter"!

Seen em both -enjoyed the longest day -a better acting cast and more of a true account of what went on in the war.

Private Ryan for me.

Deer Hunter is one of my all-time top movies.

Asked for 'either/or' between the two, as I said, I prefer the Longest Day although I like them both, but I think that the most moving war film I have ever seen is 'All Quiet on the Western Front'.

The original "Dunkirk" film with John Mills. My dad who was evacuated from there and self saw it together and he was quite moved by the realism.  Another one I enjoyed was "Millions like us" with Patricia Roc, Gordon Jackson and a familiar supporting cast, telling the story mainly of women on the Home front.  "The Cruel Sea" was a classic RN saga and closely followed the book which narrated the service of the author Nicholas Monsarrat in the Western Approaches.  Hollywood war films are more authentic than they used to be.  Years ago, they invariably had the Andrews Sisters popping up and wailing away at the close of the film.  At least, they have got away from that scenario!

I loved those old English ww2 movies, such realism not seen in the old Hollywood flics. John Wayne was in most of them playing the part of a hero who actually was never in the service, he bored me to tears. He never left the USA although my Dad loved him as a cowboy.

Probably my favourite film of all time is "Oh what a lovely war", it's now approaching fifty years old and was the first film Richard Attenborough directed. It was a massive production (filmed mostly in and around Brighton) and Attenborough sold lots of his personal possessions to help fund it. The final scene is just heart wrenchingly beautiful, I've seen it loads of times and still can tear up when the camera goes to the picnic scene, the stillness, the birdsong, the ladies in their pristine white dresses, (no men of course) the little girl running between the crosses, it's just beautiful. I'm sure it was made well before computer generated images (cgi) so just imagine the job of placing all those crosses! Here's a link to that final scene, it's about eight minutes long but well worth watching.

To his credt, I believe John Wayne volunteered for the US navy and was very frustrated and upset when they found he had a heart murmer.

I think Wayne got what was known as a 3-A deferment as he was a father of four. I suspect studio (John Ford) influence got the deferment extended due to the large number of morale-boosting war films he made.

Two excellent but very different films (even though they are both long and war based) I've got them both on DVD
The Longest Day     (1962) 168 minutes
Saving Private Ryan (1998) 163 minutes
