i remember a few years ago a top cop proposed the motorway speed limit should be raised to 80MPH reasoning we would spend less time on the motorways

I reckon a lot of motorists reckon that is the limit (or a bit more) anyway!

Without the use of a speed limiting device, it is hard to drive for any distance on a clear road at under 20 MPH.

I believe that it is a politicians' device to make driving a car less attractive. Nothing more. Unfortunately most councillors spend their time thinking up new ways to waste public money on pointless or vanity schemes like these.

Correct, speed saves lives.

There is something in that, but seriously drivers build up a sense of frustration when having to drive slowly and eventually they take risks.

Another minor point. Travelling at 20 mph often results in higher pollution levels than travelling at 30, as I pointed out in an earlier thread, because many cars (perhaps most?) will be using a lower gear at higher revs at 20 than at 30.

I agree with that and not only gaseous pollution but more noise too.
