W.V.S. are they still around,??
« on: Dec 04, 2018, 05:37:16 PM »

Many years ago there was the womens voluntary service, (W.V.S) which as i understand it did many good things helping charities and so on ,i  believe many women joined these groups,  and learned to knit, sew, and do carry out craft designs ,learning a number of skills  which i assume many women then enjoyed getting involved in,  and it was  a way for people on their own to have another life, in joining in and getting involved in other activities ,with these groups,

Q;  did or have you ever been involved in one of these groups , if so will you share your experience with us,

Its now the RVS Alfred, the Royal Voluntary Service.  A friend of mine is a volunteer with them, she works with older people who have alcohol dependency issues.  One of the cafes in our nearest hospital is run by the RVS, men can be members too now.

I've not seen them up here in the North but they have a Hospital Cafe in the PRI.

Hadn't realised that they had dropped the 'W' because it went from WVS to WRVS a long time ago. Any idea when it changed again?

Wasn't being sexist or sarcastic. It was an observation, no more.

Sadly I have been to a hospital where Costa in gaining their concession had the volunteers forced to stop selling tea/coffee/light snacks. Coffee was £1 there now CostaLotta!
