Close to the end of civilisation
« on: Dec 06, 2018, 07:17:11 PM »
and not even a mention here.

Apparently a problem with the  O2 network today left millions with NO INTERNET on their phones ALL DAY!!!

So far the suicide death toll remains a state secret. Compensation claims for mental anguish may run to billions.

Apparently O2 apologised to customers...by text. Whoops.

Unfortunately the suicide e-mails have been unavoidably delayed.

I'm on O2 & I've not had any problems with texts apart from my phone showing sent texts as 'failed' when in fact they were delivered but as soon as I sent a test text to one of my other phones I realised that it had got through.

I made one test call to my home phone & that connected ok.

I don't use data as it's a dumb phone so I've not been affected.

Don't trivialise it to many businesses, both large and small, telecommunications is an essential part of their business model, its as necessary as gas, electricity, water etc.

I would hazard a guess that it's 45% social media 45% porn or sport with business making up a part of the 10% remainder.
We didn't even have a usable data network 5 years ago.

Even if I were on O2 I probably wouldn't have noticed.

Any business, large or small, should  have a disaster management plan and we are not talking large sums of money just a good plan B.
I have a second phone on paygo with a different network, if required.

I should add that some of these small businesses do not help themselves. On chap complained that he could not work because with O2  being down he could not use the map function to get to customers. That is what Satnav is for and not relying on the phone network.

There are also actual maps and AtoZs available at any garage.

They were struggling to find legitimate complaints. One bloke on the news was moaning about missing some stuff on eBay because he couldn't bid.

Uber probably lost customers I suppose.

I imagine a lot of badly paid workers in the gig economy with little financial security lost their income for a day, which would hurt them more than their bosses..

Me too, & my smartphone's satnav function doesn't need data to work, but I have dedicated satnav anyway.

For the most part the phone and text functions worked although for some reason texts were reporting delivery failures as Daisi said. A friend had about half a dozen identical messages from her daughter until she sent one back to say they were arriving. Uber drivers rely on the app working for fares.
