I was driving buses when there was a policeman directing traffic at Mumps bridge. Now that's a long time ago. ;)

The night were dark and stormy an t'rain came down in lumps,
the tram were on it's journey from 'Ollinwood to Mumps.
A dog ran on the tramlines, the driver rang the bell,
'Dog didn't 'ear the signal now ee's on his way to 'Alifax...

Not sure cos it's a long time ago now but I think that was part of an Oldham Tinkers routine.
Content with little but a little more would be nice.

I thought Hartlepool was Monkey town..Cos they (allegedly) hung a monkey they thought was a French spy..

I'd heard the tale and thought it must be Oldham but I rechecked and found that was Hartlepool.

I think it's Heywood. Yes Hartlepool are monkey hangers.
Freedom is slavery. Leave means subjugation. Apparently

Googled and found references of Heywood being called monkey town. Heywood is part of Rochdale not Oldham. We do have a brass band though that are named "Brass Monkeys". In my opinion though we have a number of Monkey men that frequent the civic centre council meetings. ;D ;D ::)

Thank you for the clarification,CeeGee.I assumed(wrongly) that as Heywood is relatively close to Oldham you would be familiar with the former's sobriquet. My apologies.
