Scrumpy I have so much sympathy for your daughter, I have suffered likewise since late teens.  I have tried hypnotism, drugs and crackpots!  Still have it and it affects one side quarter of head and face cheekbone eye etc;  I take supplements in hope and painkillers.  Generally I get on with it but take dissolve painkiller at bedtime.  So used to it after its start in the 1960s! It's almost a friend.

Just thinking about it breaks my heart.. My daughter has had pain in her head for 8 years now.. Between injections she has her bad days.. days were she cannot lift her head from the pillow. Would I help her to be free from her pain.!
On a bad day with her suffering .. I could easily be tempted.. But then a better day comes along and she smiles and is so happy..
That's the thing, Scrumpy - there were times when Veronica said (and this goes back to the early days of her disability which struck in 2007) 'I can't stand being like this - I wish I were dead'. But her condition was cyclical and after her next dose of treatment she was in a far better state. The good days got fewer and fewer as the years went on - but they were still worth having, both for her and the rest of us.
Mike
Thank you for the days, the days you gave me.
The older I get, the better I was!

I do too, and your daughter.  Any chronic condition that causes ongoing pain is horrible. Is it trigeminal neuralgia by any chance Firenze?

Yes it is GrannyMac...its been with me so many years I forgot the original diagnosis.  There was no lack of trying on the part of the Medics, I was even prescribed Hypnosis, I learned to self hypnotise by focusing on the bright spot on a silver teapot! If I think of it to describe as now, I feel I've been socked in the right of my face.  The nerves on the right temple through the eye and down the side of the nose. The nerve in spasm is the culprit. It likes wine😄 Trigeminal Neauralgia spot on GrannyMac!

Oh dear, Firenze and Scrumpy, that sounds awful.  It seems inadequate to say but I hate to think of younger people having such a painful condition.  Keep taking the medicine (wine) Firenze. x

I had it in my thirties Firenze. It was the most excruciating pain I've ever encountered. Morphine tablets didn't even take the pain away.  I was treated for sinus problems, referred to dentists, but never properly diagnosed.  I'd be ok, then the pain would just start, it felt like my cheekbone had been hit by a hammer. After a year or so, it disappeared, I know I've been really lucky.

However, I was talking to my daughter recently, and mentioned how bad it had been.  She's a specialist pain management prescribing nurse, and she said there are much more effective drugs now that help neorological pain. I just wondered if you'd had any change to your medication, and if you have, has it helped?

GrannyMac this is so interesting I rarely hear anyone who has encountered this problem! No drugs change! I began in 1970 - I just stopped looking. Being hit with the hammer is spot on! I just accept the pain now it is part of me, sometimes obtrusive but I rationalise that I could have a gammy leg! I take Co codamol at night but otherwise Paracetamol. Nothing fixes it so I don't take painkillers by rote! In NHS terms the treatment was the best,I did try some private care too... long live NHS!

If you have a pain clinic in your area it might be worth getting a referral to see what is available. I think you're very brave and stoic to cope with it for so long.

I used to know someone with this condition and he was prescribed amitriptyline which did the trick.

I'm aware of Carbamazepine having some value in treating TGN..

Thanks for the interest GrannyMac,  I just accept its there and take Cocodamol at night and stay with paracetamol daily only taking it spasmodically during the day. More numb now I did run the gamut of drugs and clinics and the cure was worse than the disease in the end. Hypnosis was interesting!

Hello Firenze,
i am sorry for you and other p.f .members who have, and are suffering, how ever im sure you would have seen your doctor but simply as a suggestion have you had a chat with your local chemist or pharmacist,

over time iv found the pharmacist more knowledgeable than the doctor, and perhaps he or she might have alternative suggestions to make,  in the past when i wanted advice iv found their advice better than the doctor,

what ever you do, i hope you get help,  and soon,   best wishes,       alfred,.

You are very kind Alfred...I tried every road but in the end took on board that a natures mistake maybe mixed up its wires!  A hand palm over the temple about covers the discomfort now and I view it as an ache I have which maybe equates to a rheumatic nag.
