Sad Tale
« on: Jan 17, 2019, 01:02:05 AM »

Taken last summer. This chick was sticking out of mums feathers for shelter from the fountain water, only one or two days old. A couple of days later she was devoured by the Heron.

A sad tale indeed. Not sure why you'd share it so graphically though.

Herons are a damn nuisance for those with fish ponds, but nothing a 22 air rifle can't sort out.

One comes to our local pond every summer, it's there to kill the baby ducks. I always chase it off but the buggers back the next day.  >:(

It's illegal to shoot them. It's illegal to shoot most things these days including worse vermin than herons who are just going what herons do.

Great photo.

It certainly is, & it's illegal to shoot hawks.

IMO this thread demonstrates the effect that man has on the environment. When we see a little chick, we see a little ball of fluff, when a heron see a little chick, he sees dinner. Over millennia nature seeks a balance between prey animal and predators. If there were no predators then the prey animals would over populate and many would die a slow death through starvation, its sad but true, nature is red in tooth and claw. Sadly man comes along we destroy habitat, we kill animals for fun, we upset the balance of nature. We are far too far down the line to do anything about it now, but remember a fluffy little chick is also a dinner for someone else's little chick.

In all they lost six out of twelve chicks over the season, but on a good note six developed into juveniles and they add to the beauty and attraction of our park. :)

If they all survived there would probably be insufficient food. Either that or they'd be invading the town and fighting pigeons for MaccyD leftovers dumped in the street.
