The thing to remember with red hot pokers is to hold them by the cold end. Very important that.

I remember when I was very young seeing an old man light his fag with a red hot poker that he had shoved in the fire.
 I looked at him in awe.. His fag was a skinny old hand made one. Yet he positioned the poker just at the tip .. His nose stayed intact..

There were some red hot pokers in the dunes near our caravan. We had our eyes on them but somebody got to them first and shifted them to just outside their van window. They died off. Karma.
