He has done the right thing but apart from a dent to his pride (& numerous dents to his & the other car), surrendering his licence will have no impact on his life whatsoever.

It would be much harder for an elderly driver living on their own in the wilds with no bus route.

I used to live in a small village & an old guy who had to stop driving after an accident was dead within a year as I suspect he just gave up as he'd be more or less living in an open prison.

I've always bought a house near bus stops and shops.  Living stranded in the countryside would be my worst nightmare.  I'm a townie at heart.

Looks like a lot of bus routes are to be cancelled because of the costs of running them and apparently it's all our (pensioner's) fault for having too many bus passes. Easier to blame us than the Government's axe I suppose.

It's about £4.50 for a Daysaver ticket in Brum.  It would be expensive if they stopped the bus passes.  Our provider is National Express and most of the routes are very busy so hopefully won't be axed.

I suppose the well-traveled town and city routes will be okay but the less-traveled but-just-as-important-for-some routes will go. Not so important cos it's just poorer folk disadvantaged. Seems to be the modern way. Soylent Green here we come.

I surrendered my license  three years ago due to health problems, eyesight mostly.Surrendered mine before I was advised to by the medical people because I knew my eyesight wasn't up to scratch.
Don't miss driving at all, the standard of driving nowadays is atrocious & a money grabbing council with a hate the motorist policy is killing this city. No hassle to use the bus or train, love it. Off on a coach holiday later this morning to Morecambe for five days & that suits us fine !

Perhaps Phil's choice was face a prosecution, or give up the licence  ?   I'd like to think so

I doubt that mentioning a holiday on a fairly anonymous low activity forum such as this is risking much. Sites where you are easily identifiable with large numbers of users such as Facebook is of course a different matter.
