HS2
« on: Feb 11, 2019, 09:21:19 AM »
News report  today suggests MPs now  have doubts that HS2 makes economic sense, why does it take years for these overpaid muppets to come to the same conclusion, that most of the general public could see was so blindingly obvious  from day one.

I've never taken an interest in H2S. I just assumed that it would just be another white elephant without actually reading up on it at all.

Well it'll give them more dosh to spend on London & the South East transport projects because nowhere else in the UK counts.

The political class likes to throw other people's money around. Maybe they thought the economy would boom, maybe they believed the case that was made for it, maybe it was a european dirtective, who can tell. HS1 was supposed to have feeders from north of London and that never happened either.

I know its supposed to assist the northern powerhouse but doesn't it start off in London and won't get past Leeds til most here have popped their clogs?

It wouldn't really affect me in any significant way and I agree and wonder just how much has been spent so far without a rail being laid.

I believe you make a good point when you say MPs are slow to understand the ramifications of their decisions.
In spite of that, I'm inclined to believe HS2, like Heathrow Expansion, are necessary projects.  I'd prefer it if neither project were necessary, but as we seem determined to have 100 million people living on this green and pleasant land, both are probably necessary.

I sincerely wish we could cap population.  Then we might be able to grasp what the country practically needs taking into account the available new technology and available resources.
For example, if we are going to have driverless cars why would we want railways except for the most congested commuter routes.  If we are going to have virtual face-time why would we want to transport the elites about the world or between our major cities.  I'd like to cap the numbers of flights taken as well as the numbers of homes built beyond what is really needed.  But planning, it seems to me, depends upon capping population.

Some very good points there about future transport needs or possible lack of them BP.

We talk about fantastic railways whisking folk about at aeroplane speeds when in our neck of the woods, we have nearby villages in East Northamptonshire, entirely bereft of public transport i.e a bus service.  Fifty years ago, there were proper scheduled services but due to bus deregulation and one of the Tilling Group withdrawing their buses, now the locals have to rely on their cars or the community bus, whatever that is?  There should be a national transport plan drawn up comprising all forms of the latter but that would smack of socialism would it not?

Such a plan was drawn up in 1968. It wasn't a very good plan in my opinion. At the time the government owned the railways and half the major bus companies, and under the plan they nationalised the remainder of the bus companies and formalised railway subsidies. The eu has made this kind of ecenomics verboten, but personally I favour a mixed economy.

The main thing about HS2 is it's already cost a fortune and not a sleeper has been laid after some 6 years or more of burning money. Many communities are put out by it and few will be able to, or want to, afford to ride on it. The money could be better spent on improving the existing network with such old fashioned ideas as additional running lines and passing loops, and other improvements to accommodate longer trains.
