I am also lucky, with savings, and having my son living with me means shared outgoings, but I can imagine a pensioner living alone, not qualifying  for pension credit, and having to pay hefty council tax, energy bills, etc, out of the British meagre state pension, struggling from week to week, smoking or not.

If I only had the state pension there is no way that I could continue to live here - the fixed outgoings - Council tax, phone, electricity, etc., even supposing that I would no longer be paying income tax would be about 70% of the pension - and that's without eating or having a car.

People in Birmingham keep on telling me I am the only one who does not £5,000,000.00. How is that the case as there are a lot of homeless people.
I am not homeless and I dont have £5,000,000.00.

Brian, you started another thread today with exactly the same information.   :-\    Tedious.

Send them to the USA

Before you start to equate what constitutes poverty in the USA and here in the UK, I personally don't know anyone over 65 that is that poor that they don't have warm clothing, regular hot meals and a roof over their heads.
Poverty to me is the definition of not having any money, very few bits of clothing, does not have regular hot meals and lives out in the open.

Poverty can also be a state of mind linked with what you see others around you having access to.

That's not poverty - that's jealousy

See my sig. 😉
I found it interesting when I worked in local authority housing, how households of similar size and similar incomes could have such different lifestyles.  All might be classed as in relative poverty, but as much depended on their health, values and spending choices as simply on income.  Not suggesting everyone in social housing is poor, but on one particular estate there weren't many high earners!

True - on the other hand, I will never stop pointing out how utterly stupid is the definition of 'poverty'. Most of those in the category would have been seen as not doing too badly when I was a child
